Full job description

You will be providing emotional and practical support to adult patients, their relatives and NHS staff in the A&E department and in queuing ambulances. This role involves volunteering in a fast-paced A&E department. The service operates 10am to 8pm Monday to Sunday, including bank holidays. We would like you to: - Commit to a minimum of 6 hours at a time; ideally once a week. - Be able to be active throughout the shift which may involve restocking supplies, collecting from different departments i.e. prescriptions, moving and restocking linen. - Driving is preferable but not essential. If you drive, you must have held a driving licence for at least 2 years which allows you to drive in the UK. - Provide one to one support with a variety of patients including dementia, end of life etc. - Provide hydration and nutrition with hot tea trolley, water jugs etc. - Communicate via email and complete online training. - Be able to commit to volunteering for a minimum of 12 months. *Due to the nature of this role, applicants must undergo Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check. Applicants will be asked to provide ID documents in support of the DBS check.* Diversity is something we celebrate. Why we want you: If you are compassionate and like helping and meeting people, then this could be the role for you. Volunteers, like you, will help provide practical and emotional support to service users and their relatives during what could be a distressing and vulnerable time, as well as supporting the NHS staff within the department.

Tasks: Providing emotional support for patients and relatives waiting for or receiving treatment

Giving emotional support and pastoral care to people, including queuing ambulances

Helping improve patients’ experience via emotional support, practical tasks such as providing refreshments, contacting family members etc.

Signposting patients, relatives, and NHS staff to other services.

Assisting with lunch, tea rounds and other practical tasks such as assisting with hot and cold food, hot tea trolley, etc

Being on your feet in a fast paced environment and undertaking a variety of tasks such as going to the pharmacy, replenishing stock etc.

Skills: Warm and friendly with empathy for others.

Good communication skills.

Encouraging and supportive.

Can work independently and as a part of a team.

Able to commit to a regular shift.

Able to volunteer in a busy and emotionally challenging environment
