Full job description

Job Title: Capital Works Designer
Salary: £40,000
Location: Walsall, West Midlands

South Staffs Water are seeking a skilled and motivated Capital Works Designer to join our Network Investment Delivery team. Reporting to the Infrastructure Programme Manager, you will play a key role in designing new mains, diversions, renewals, and other capital works that support the efficient operation and long‑term resilience of our water distribution network.

The Role:

This is a technical, hands‑on design role requiring strong engineering knowledge, excellent stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to produce high‑quality design packs that enable safe, compliant, and cost‑effective construction.

Key Responsibilities

Produce designs for new mains (company‑lay, self‑lay, and NAV schemes) in line with Developer Services requirements and service level agreements.
Deliver mains diversion designs to support externally reported performance commitments.
Provide reinforcement design solutions for new mains.
Review and approve third‑party design submissions across Developer Services workstreams.
Interpret feasibility information and develop detailed design packs aligned with feasibility outputs.
Determine and manage trial hole requirements, ensuring timely and accurate information.
Monitor and report contractor performance relating to trial hole activities.
Ensure all schemes comply with CDM regulations, including HSE notifications and appropriate design‑stage CDM documentation.
Engage with external stakeholders and highway authorities to incorporate requirements and coordinate works.
Work closely with construction contractors to develop cost‑effective, practical solutions.
Challenge and improve existing mains rehabilitation procedures where appropriate.
Produce ACAD drawings for all schemes.
Support Project Managers with scheme pack issuance and follow design amendment procedures.
Deliver design solutions for additional capital works such as new DMAs/PRVs, trunk main meters, and control valves.
Produce detailed design packs and associated ACAD drawings.
Provide support to the wider Capital Investment Delivery Directorate.
Participate in cross‑functional project teams and meetings as required.

What You’ll Need:

Essential

HNC in an Engineering discipline (or equivalent).
NRSWA Streetworks Certificate.
Strong understanding of water distribution system principles and operations.
CDM training and working knowledge of CDM requirements.
Proficient IT skills, including CAD.
Strong report‑writing ability.
Confident communicator at all organisational levels.
Full, valid driving licence.

Desirable

Practical knowledge of mains rehabilitation techniques.
Understanding of the Traffic Management Act.
Knowledge of NRSWA notification processes.
IOSH Working Safely certification.
