The Role

Kickstart your career in public health with a role that combines real-world experience with funded degree study.

We’re looking for a motivated Public Health Practitioner Apprentice to join our Mental Wellbeing and Community Development Team within the Health Improvement Service.

This 3-year higher degree apprenticeship will support you to achieve a BSc (Hons) in Public Health, while gaining hands-on experience and eligibility to apply for the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR).

You’ll spend:

1 day per week studying (online with UWE)
The rest of your time gaining practical experience, working on real projects that improve health and reduce inequalities across North Somerset

You’ll work alongside experienced professionals on a wide range of projects, building the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in a rewarding public health career.

Throughout the three years you will gain experience across key areas of public health including evaluation, policy development and the use of evidence to improve services.

During the first year, the postholder will undertake responsibilities aligned with a Health Improvement Coordinator (Level 4) role, providing maternity leave cover for a role that supports the Mental Wellbeing and Early Years Teams. These responsibilities are consistent with the apprentice level and will be undertaken with appropriate supervision, providing valuable, hands-on experience of delivering public health programmes while developing the core knowledge, skills and behaviours required for the apprenticeship.

Work Style

We offer flexible, hybrid working to support a healthy work-life balance.

This role is classed as a Flexible Worker, meaning you can expect:

2–3 days in the office
A mix of home and office working depending on your tasks

Training is provided to help balance work-life and manage time effectively, with an emphasis on communication for team touchpoints and planning in-office days for collaboration.

During your induction, you may spend more time in the office to support your development.

We are flexible and open to discussions about your preferred working style, and if you wish to be in the office more frequently, this can be negotiated.

About You

You are organised, curious, and ready to learn. You enjoy working with data and people, and you’re motivated by making a difference.

You may have gained experience through work, volunteering, study or community activities. This does not need to be in public health, but you should be able to demonstrate relevant skills such as teamwork, communication, organisation, and using information to support decisions.

You will:

Be confident using IT systems and handling data accurately
Demonstrate strong organisation and time management skills
Be able to analyse information and turn it into clear, meaningful insights
Communicate effectively with a wide range of people

You’re also:

A team player who is reliable and approachable
Non-judgemental and committed to tackling health inequalities
Passionate about improving health and wellbeing in your community
Keen to build strong relationships with colleagues, partners and the public, and contribute to reports and projects that influence real change.

Requirements

You will need:

A minimum of 96 UCAS tariff points from Level 3/A-level qualifications
At least 3 GCSEs (grade C/4 or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent)

This apprenticeship is designed for those new to the field, so you must:

Not already hold (or be studying towards) a Degree or Master’s in public health or a related subject
Not be registered or undertaking professional public health registration

You must also meet ESFA eligibility requirements, including:

Being aged 16+
Having the right to work in the UK
Not currently in full-time education or another apprenticeship
