Care Services Manager
St Joseph's Convent with Care, Whitby
£37,500 - £40,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
Lead with Purpose in a Truly Unique Care Setting
St Joseph's Convent with Care is a beautiful 17-bedroom convent overlooking the Yorkshire coast in Whitby, offering a rare opportunity to combine exceptional leadership with meaningful relationships with our Sisters.
As part of the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy, a values-led non-profit organisation, this role is about far more than managing a service. It is about supporting a warm, welcoming home for our Sisters, where dignity, compassion and high-quality care shape everyday life.
Unlike larger care settings, our smaller community allows you the time and space to build genuine connections, spend meaningful time with Sisters and lead in a visible, hands-on way. Your impact will be felt every day by those you support and the team you inspire.
For an experienced care leader seeking autonomy, purpose and the opportunity to make a lasting difference, this is a genuinely rewarding and distinctive role.
About the Role
Working within the ethos and values of the Institute, you will lead the delivery of compassionate, person-centred care for our religious Sisters who live within the convent, while ensuring the smooth and effective day-to-day operation of the home.
You will oversee all aspects of service delivery, including care provision, staffing, finances, catering, property management, maintenance and compliance. This role requires a confident and capable manager who can balance strong operational leadership with a caring and approachable presence.
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with the teams on site, the Head of People and Services, the Care Quality Lead and Institute Colleagues to ensure the Convent remains fully compliant with all relevant legislation, regulations and best practice.
- Lead, develop and support the staff team across care, administration, catering, domestic and maintenance services, including recruitment, induction, supervision, performance management and appraisals, with support from Head Office in Leeds.
- Manage the home's finances responsibly, ensuring effective budget control in consultation with the designated Trustee and Head Office.
- Ensure the safe, efficient and welcoming day-to-day running of the Convent, maintaining high standards across the environment, facilities and equipment.
- Foster a positive, inclusive and person-centred culture where colleagues feel valued, supported and empowered to deliver outstanding care.
- Promote the wellbeing, dignity and independence of Sisters, ensuring their individual needs and preferences remain at the centre of decision-making.
About You
You will be an experienced care professional with a passion for delivering exceptional care and creating positive environments for both Sisters and staff.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Level 5 Leadership & Management Award, Leadership for Health & Social Care, Registered Manager Award (RMA) or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of three years' experience managing a CQC-registered residential care service for older adults as a Registered Home Manager, Deputy Manager or within an equivalent leadership role.
- Strong understanding of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and Care Quality Commission Fundamental Standards.
- Knowledge of the ageing process and best practice in supporting older adults, including dementia care and end-of-life care.
- Excellent leadership, communication and relationship-building skills.
- Financial management and budget oversight experience.
Personal Qualities
- Compassionate, approachable and person centred.
- Able to inspire and motivate teams through positive leadership.
- Organised, proactive and solutions focused.
