Senior Air Traffic Control Officer (SATCO) = Wick Airport

Are you ready for your next big career challenge? If so, then we have an amazing opportunity for you as Wick SATCO.

This is a challenging role, so we are looking for an individual who has strong people management skills along with an excellent understanding of ATC technical and regulatory requirements. You will be required to demonstrate that you have excellent leadership potential, strong interpersonal skills and communications skills. You should be a strong team player and people manager and be able to make sound decisions under pressure and contribute towards an effective interdepartmental team working within the airport.

The successful candidate is required to hold an Air Traffic Controller’s licence issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), containing an Aerodrome Control Instrument (ADI) rating and an Approach Control Procedural (APP) rating. Applicants with an ADI or APP rating only may be considered, but if either of these is not already held you will be required to obtain the additional rating. The operational position is combined ADI/APP, you will be required to obtain and maintain valid unit endorsements, operational currency and roster cover when required. The current airport hours do not require shift working, but some weekend working will be necessary.

Ideally you should also hold an On Job Training Instructor (OJTI) licence endorsement. Previous experience of unit management and project management will be a distinct advantage. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate a sound working knowledge of all relevant ICAO and UK regulatory requirements including Safety Management Systems (SMS) and associated procedures.

In this operational role you will work closely with the Air Traffic Services Manager (ATSM) to assure the provision of ATS. You will be expected to contribute to the Airport Team supporting the overall strategic development plan and specific projects. In addition, you will liaise closely with Head Office Corporate functions to provide information in support of wider strategic priorities to ensure that the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT) and HIAL Board are fully appraised on all Air Traffic projects and activities at the airport.

Wick Airport has recently been awarded funding by the Scottish Government to support air services operating from Wick to Aberdeen and Glasgow. This funding will support the Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes from 17 August 2026, helping to maintain vital air connections for communities, businesses and visitors in the north of Scotland. In addition to this there is a wide variety of general aviation traffic as well as offshore flights and training aircraft.
