Job Description
The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) is part of the Joint Protective Services Directorate with responsibility for the investigation of major crime across the tri-force area. The MCU is based from two hubs: in the south at Hertfordshire Police Headquarters, Welwyn Garden City and in the north at Cambridgeshire Police Headquarters, Hinchingbrooke, Huntingdon.
The Major Crime Unit investigation remit incorporates but is not exclusive to Homicide (Murder, Manslaughter, Attempted Murder), Kidnap, Blackmail, and Extortion.
We are now hiring for a full time Investigator, who will be based in the Outside enquiry team at the Northern hub. This is a rare and very exciting opportunity to join a team of highly motivated investigators who deal with the most serious criminal offences and who enjoy an extremely high success rate.
The Police Staff Assistant Investigator role requires the holder to conduct enquiries as directed by the Senior Investigating Officer (or their deputy and the appropriate line manager).
Your team will consist of approximately six officers and staff with line management by a Detective Sergeant. There are five teams which make up the Outside Enquiry team.
It is desirable but not essential that the successful candidate has previous investigative experience/Pip 1 accredited. We are looking for the right candidate for the role.
This post is based in Huntingdon but there will be a requirement to travel and work from bases across the tri-force area and beyond.
Every day is different whatever your role in policing, so here’s a brief overview of your day-to-day responsibilities:
Taking statements from victims and witnesses
Completing house to house enquiries
Scoping and viewing of CCTV footage
Review of call data and mobile devices
Assisting with case file building
Fulfilling the role of Disclosure or exhibits officer for investigations falling outside of the MCU remit
Giving evidence in court
Witness management
Undertake training as a Family liaison officer
Contributing to achieving the vision, purpose, and values of the JPS Major Crime Unit.
It is important to us that we hire someone with the right values and attitude that align with ours. Whether officer or staff, we are serving the public, and the policing Competency and Values Framework underpins everything we do. We are also looking for you to:
Have great attention to detail
Be proactive and use your initiative
Take a solution-focused approach to any query or task
Be a team player
Be adaptable.
For the purposes of the application, you will be expected to provide a 750 word expression of interest including;
Evidence of skills/attributes and evidence to meet the role profile and the reason why you wish to join MCU.
Additionally:
Please note that due to the high level of vetting for this role, 7 years of UK residency is required.
Full UK manual driving licence is required.
Internal applicants within Bedfordshire Police, Cambridgeshire Constabulary or Hertfordshire Constabulary (BCH), should upload either a CV or complete a ‘Staff internal role summary’ form, which can be found in the vacancy documents below.
External applicants should upload your current CV.
All applications must be submitted through our online recruitment website by clicking the apply button below.
It is recommended that you download and store a copy of the role profile as this will no longer be available once the advert has closed.
Following review of the applications, successful applicants will be invited for an Interview.
If you think this could be the role for you, we encourage you to apply.

Please note that, as part of the vetting process, the BCH Vetting Unit may need to contact your current line manager for a Supervisor Appraisal. This requirement aligns with the 2025 National Guidelines for Vetting (APP 6.5.18).
Examples of when this may apply include:
Transferring to another force
Renewing vetting clearance
Moving into a role requiring MV clearance (even if you currently hold MV clearance)
Moving into or working in a role involving close contact with vulnerable individuals
If any of the above apply to you, please expect your line manager to be contacted when you submit your vetting application.
Redeployment and Redundancy
This vacancy is open to employees at risk of redundancy and will remain available to redeployees until a final offer has been agreed and accepted.
Redeployees at risk of redundancy will take priority over all other applicants at any stage of the recruitment process. If successful, redeployees will remain on their home force’s terms and conditions.
