Job description

Reporting to a Senior Performance Analyst, the Digital Performance Analyst will be part of a team with the remit of continuously improving the reporting capability across DBT. Measuring both the macro and micro moments of the user journey and being able to communicate this insight effortlessly to a wide range of audiences to optimise the potential of the digital estate across DBT.

The Digital Performance Analyst also plays an integral role within the wider DDaT Directorate through the collaboration of digital skills and experience in delivering data solutions and analysis to drive continuous improvement and user value. A performance analyst is a numerate role, with experience in analysis and data handling. The role requires responsibility for the accuracy and quality of data and analysis, and how they are used.

About you

As a Digital Performance Analyst you will be part of a high performing and dynamic team. You will be responsible for communicating analysis and insight across the department's digital services. You will enable service and product owners to develop performance frameworks and ensure that business solutions are aligned with strategy, business goals and end user needs.

You will understand the concept of the different phases of product delivery and be able to plan and run the analysis for these. You will contribute to decision-making throughout the product life cycle, as well as work in collaboration with user researchers, developers and other roles throughout the product life cycle. You will be able to identify and apply the most appropriate analytical techniques to bring different sources together to tell a story and involve teams in analytics to increase consensus and challenge assumptions.

You will understand and identify who the users are and what their needs are, based on evidence. You will adopt a user centric approach and manage competing priorities, collaborate with professions that are focused on user-centred design (for example, user research, user experience, content, design, business analysis).

You will have knowledge of quality assurance and validation techniques and be able to apply them to data, analysis and reporting outputs. You will ensure that performance measures are robust, data sources are trusted, and insights are based on accurate and reliable evidence. You will identify and investigate data quality issues, challenge inconsistencies, and promote best practice in the collection, management and use of performance data across digital services.

Main responsibilities

Your key tasks as a Digital Performance Analyst will involve:

Defining what good looks like by developing performance frameworks aligned to organisational strategy, business objectives and user needs
Developing performance analysis projects, selecting the most appropriate methodologies to generate actionable insights
Analysing service performance data, primarily from Google Analytics, complemented by other quantitative and qualitative data sourcesto identify opportunities for service improvement
Collaborating with product teams to assess and enhance the performance of digital services across the product lifecycle
Presenting analytical findings clearly and persuasively, tailoring communication to suit different audiences
Applying quality assurance practices to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of performance data and analysis outputs
Developing and maintaining dashboards, ensuring key stakeholders, product owners, and policy teams have access to timely and relevant performance data

Person specification

It is essential that you have:

Strong numeracy and demonstratable hands-on experience with SQL to extract, manipulate and analyse data. Experience in data analysis, data modelling and data visualisation (e.g. QuickSight or Power BI), ideally within a digital or service delivery context, to support evidence-based decision making (Lead Criteria)
Demonstrable experience of translating business objectives, user needs, and organisational goals into meaningful performance measures, KPIs, and outcome metrics, and using these to monitor service effectiveness and provide actionable insights
Experience of preparing, cleansing, validating, and assuring the quality of data, with an understanding of data governance, ethical considerations, and operational constraints
Confidence in communicating analytical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, using evidence and insight to influence decision-making and continuous improvement using evidence and insight to influence decision-making and drive service improvement
Technical understanding of digital measurement and analytics, with hands-on experience of analytics platforms (e.g. Google Analytics 4) and tag management solutions (e.g. Google Tag Manager)

It is desirable that you have:

Experience of working within an Agile Delivery team and an understanding of user-centred design and analysis
Experience of working with developers to capture further bespoke metrics via the dataLayer
Experience of AB/multivariate testing

How we interview

At the interview stage for this role, you will be asked to demonstrate relevant Technical Skills and Behaviours from the Success Profiles framework. These are role specific and in line with the DDaT Capability Framework.

You will also be asked to undergo a technical assessment and will be informed on the topic on the day.

How we offer

Offers will be made in merit order based on location preferences. If you pass the bar at interview but are not the highest scoring you will be held on a 12-month reserve list in case a role becomes available. If you are judged a near miss at interview, you may be offered a post at the grade below the one you applied for.

This role requires SC clearance. DBTs requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years. Failure to meet this requirement will result in your application being rejected and your offer will be withdrawn.

This role can only be worked from within the UK, not overseas. If you are based in London, you will receive London weighting. DBT employees are contracted to work in a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in the office. Travel to your primary office location will not be paid for by DBT, but costs for travel to an office which is not your main location will be covered.
