Full job description

We are seeking an enthusiastic Lecturer in Biochemistry (Maternity Cover) to join the Department of Biomolecular Sciences. You will contribute to the educational activities including delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Biochemistry and other bioscience disciplines. In this role you will plan, develop, and deliver high-quality, inclusive and innovative teaching and assessments in collaboration with academics within the team. You will also be expected to contribute to the evidence-base of research in the subject discipline. The role will require some administrative responsibilities and the supervision of undergraduate research projects.

The Person

You will have a first degree in Biochemistry or a related bioscience subject, with a PhD in a bioscience discipline. Teaching experience is desirable, but we also would strongly encourage applications from individuals otherwise qualified.

You will use your teaching, research experience to promote practical knowledge to students that they will take with them in their future studies and career. Constantly seeking to improve, you will scrutinise your own work and work collaboratively to enhance the Faculty and School’s reputation in higher education and occupational circles. Students at Kingston University come from a broad range of backgrounds and educational experiences and the person undertaking this position will play a key role in allowing such students to realise their potential.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate that they meet the Kingston University standards in learning and teaching, and research. For those new to teaching, there will be the opportunity to engage with our accredited Introduction to Learning and Teaching course.

We would like the individual to contribute to teaching topic areas in Biochemistry and Biomedical Science. We would welcome passionate educators that can equip students with real-world skills and contribute to Kingston University’s vision to remain firmly at the forefront of embedding future skills in the curriculum to prepare graduates for career success. You will contribute to the personal tutor scheme, offering pastoral support to students and helping them develop their academic and professional skills.

The Faculty

School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry

Employability, practical skills and life skills – these are the three core areas of focus in the School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry at Kingston University. We live in a world where there is so much information out there about vital subjects such as cancer biology, pharmacy and sport and nutrition, but it is the real world application of these areas of study that really makes our school stand out. You will be part of a group that instils the importance of critical thinking, leadership skills and the personal touch for our ambitious students.

We have invested heavily in the development of new facilities, with our laboratories providing access to ultra-modern equipment and teaching facilities in areas such as biochemistry, biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology, sport science (including biomechanics and an environmental testing chamber), chemical synthesis and analysis, pharmaceutics, specialist labs for pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical science and chemistry, a forensic scene-of-crime house and a pharmacy dispensing simulation suite.

Further information

This is a full time, fixed term position for 8 months (September 2026 - April 2027) with a starting salary of £45,025 per annum.

This post is available as a result of maternity leave and it is expected that you will hold it for the full period. However, should the substantive post-holder on maternity leave exercise her right to return to work earlier, then this appointment will be terminated, subject to a notice period of one month.
