As Senior Strategic Planning Policy Officer for Conwy County Borough Council I have led on a number of areas of work, including:
•	Writing and reviewing comments made on different policy chapters of the Council’s emerging Local Development Plan; 
•	Topic areas include housing, employment, retail, open space, built heritage, Welsh language and Minerals and Waste. 
•	Experience as a witness at the examination hearing sessions and planning appeals, preparing proofs of evidence and responded to questions by the Inspectors and other interested parties at the roundtable discussions. 

My position has involved managing and supervising other members of staff within the service and I have also deputised for the Strategic Planning Policy Manager at meetings as required. I am keen to progress my career and take on greater responsibilities including leading on and contributing to development projects as part of multi disciplinary teams.

Working conditions, great building, honest hardworking colleagues, progression opportunities and support.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?

Only stressful when we’re temporarily short staffed!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Honest, hardworking full of integrity. Some of the most decent people I’ve ever worked with. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrive, clock in (Flexitime), chat with colleagues, get set up, grab coffee, get to work. There is no such thing as being late really - we work flexitime and check in with our managers if we want to work later or earlier. It makes for a great work-life balance.

The service likes to promote well being and work life balance, in reality this does not happen. Management is old School and restrictive, modernisation and improvements are met as a criticism.
Then there is the red tape, scrutiny from the cabinet can be long winded and unhelpful. Moral is at a low following years of pay caps and budget reductions. More work, less pay. The most enjoyable part of the job is self satisfaction at a job well done within tight constraints and restrictive time scales. When your away from work your looked after, sick pay, access to Physio, special leave etc.

i always enjoyed my work at conwy county borough council, it was always a professional and organised council, my superiors were highly efficient in their approach to our duties and to myself personally, my colleauges were all hardworking and professional approach to the duties required of us to complete on a daily basis.
the hardest part of the job was digging the council allotments, and making sure always safe for the general public to use.
my most enjoyable part of the job was litter picking , and cleaning the areas of collection of fly tipping, and also working with my colleauges.

I worked for Conwy Council for ten years until I took voluntary redundancy in March 2019. It was hard work but enjoyable and different every day.

Built up some excellent relationships with the young people and staff as well as members of the community. Organising events and seeing they were successful was an enjoyable part of the job.

The council always offered suitable training on a regular basis. A typical day at work for me would start with a 40-45 minute drive from Flintshire to Conwy followed by a 12-14 hour day and a 40-45 minute drive home.

The job role itself was extremely rewarding but the Management team for Environment were outdated and not accommodating to new Transport Legislation. Non compliance of new regulations was the reason I left the post. Transport Law and Road Safety are paramount to my career and to be put in a position where I could not fulfil these legal obligations went against my principles. The salary was reasonable for my skills but I was not used to my full potential.

I loved working for Conwy and only left due to relocation to the USA.

It was a friendly and relaxed place to work. A professional and productive environment. Had the pleasure of working for ERF (Environment, Roads & Facilities) which was an innovative department, with great leadership and management, who provided excellent support. The most enjoyable part of the job was being able to work on innovative projects with the full support of senior management.

Pros job security, great flexible working policy, decent pay for North Wales, lots of role specific training opportunities, good pension and annual leave 
Few opportunities to move up into management in this department or career advancement  (social services) can be very demanding work and stressful but that’s the same everywhere. High caseloads and not enough social workers will lead to people leaving.  Mileage policy is flawed



My job is varied, so I love it I enjoy working with most of my team, and some staff, my manager is amazing, however, there is a lot of deadwood in the council usually staff that have been there 4 years plus know how to swing the lead with sickness,

Working for Conwy has had its ups and downs but it is a good job.  There is chances for advancement and they train you well and are supportive of any further training you request. The pay is good and the security of sick pay is a major advantage. I have not needed maternity pay but have seen others very well supported during their pregnancies.
