You have to ask yourself before anything. “Why does LDC have so many vacancies?” The answer to that question is simple. LDC is one of the most depressing, stressful, disrespectful and money grabbing companies I have ever worked for and quiet frankly ever known!

First off, my induction alone was just that. Alone! I’d never worked in care before and I was left alone with service users that are known to have violent behaviours on my first day when I was supposed to be shadowing. With in the first few day I was completing personal care alone, was never shown how to achieve safety standards and just pretty much thrown in at the deep end to get on with it.

Upon joining you will have to fill in a care certificate and complete it with in 3 months, this is mandatory but that is the case throughout the sector. However, you will be given no help on this. You are expected to research the entire thing yourself with no support. That okay, it’s pretty easy and strait forward. What isn’t on though is the fact you will be charged £150 if you leave the company before completing this. That’s being charged £150 for a paper booklet that are printed off on mass with no support whatsoever to complete it within your own personal down time. This charge is outlined in your contract. Word of warning, read your contract in every single detail because they have you over a barrel on many aspects.

Your rota will be a constant fight to try and access a full month at a time so you can plan your life around work like normal people have to do. I’ve had situations where I’ve had to hound managers for a rota so I can cover childcare for when I’m working. The majority of manager just shrug it off and just leave you with no real answers. Previously I’ve had a rota released on the Thursday before giving me 3 days to work out child care for the week ahead. It’s extremely common for rotas to be released 2 weeks at a time, get to the end of those 2 weeks and you don’t know what service or days you’re working next week as the new rota still hasn’t been released making it impossible to have any real work life balance. 

The main gripes people have are the long hours, minimum wages and a work culture that could be compared to a sweatshop. I’ve known young, inexperienced staff to work weeks on end doing long 15 hour day into wake nights and sleeps without going home for no thanks what so ever for pretty much working an amount of hours that are 3 times over their contract, all for minimum wage. That’s £6.56 an hour if you’re 18 to 20. LDC love this as the younger you are the less they have to pay and the majority of their work force are youngsters. It’s not much better for people over the higher threshold of minimum wage of 25. When you start you will be on minimum wage. Once you complete your care certificate and probation you get all of 9 pence extra an hour! Don’t let the hourly rate advertised on indeed fool you, that’s for people with level 2/3 social care qualifications. If you start with nothing and have no previous qualifications you’ll be paid pretty much nothing.

You’ll hear constant stories of the company making profits into the millions and growing in profit year on year. Don’t for one second forget this is first off a business and second a care company, it’s all about profits and bottom line. Service users are living in run down, underfunded homes and given support workers that are paid minimum wage and are over worked to the point of exhaustion. Even the employee hand book on the very first page states “we will not allow our service users to live in a home we would not be prepared to live in ourselves.” That’s the biggest lie and joke of them all as some of the guys are living in filth and squalor.

You’ll constantly be asked to do extra shifts as LDC have grown to an amount that is unmanageable for the company to handle. What was once a small family run company with good solid values is now a frantic scramble on a daily basis to find cover for unsupported services. 

Managers are over worked, under staffed and pretty much disrespected constantly by their superiors and this all trickles down from the top, so as a support worker you’re not supported by your manager as they aren’t supported by theirs. This means support workers getting frustrated, upset and feeling abandoned from the lack of support. The support worker will then take these frustrations out on their managers so it all just ends up in a huge squabbling match where no one really wins.

Unless you put your foot down and stand up for yourself a little you will be walked over, put on extra shift without being asked, your shift will be moved without notice and you will be redeployed at a moments notice with no real reason behind it so you can at least try and understand why. If keep you you contracted hours (good luck with that) you’ll be made out to be lazy, not a team player and pretty much told you’re a part timer. 

The majority of staff LDC employe are caring people. But there has lately become an attitude of anyone will do. As the old saying goes, pay peanuts, get monkeys and trust me, this company has more primates than monkey world! 

Before you consider working for LDC look closely at these reviews. I wish I did before. Look at the massive disconnect between the 1 star ratings and the 5 ratings. The 1 stars are pretty much all support workers/care givers. The 5 stars are for the most part managers. This will tell you all you need to know!

The management are not able to provide the support needed, probably likely they don't get they support they need themselves. I personally found the job very stressful, as I had a challenging Service user and unfortunately no progress was being made. Whenever there was an incident you would have to deal with it, and hope that your manager could come and support you in person. However, this isn't always possible which I understand as managers do have other service users and duties. I also found from experience that not much is done when an incident occurs, it just gets reported and doesn't really get resolved, and care plans weren't updated frequently to reflect the Service users needs and behaviours.

I also felt that it was somewhat dishonest to state to staff in training that if they do not enjoy working at a service that they can express their feelings and have management look into moving them into a different service (it felt implied that you can be moved easily).  I expressed such feelings, however I was offered a service that also had very challenging behaviours (which I had worked at before on occasion), and I explained that these behaviours exacerbate my anxiety,  and that I would prefer to be placed into a different service were these types of behaviours aren't present, or at least not on daily basis. However, I feel the issue here is if all other services are filled with Support workers, then the possibility of being moved are incredibly slim, and also unfair to those Service users and staff as they have already established positive working environments and bonds with their Service users. And frankly if I was asked to be moved/swap to a challenging service I would say no myself, the point I making here really is if you are in a service you don't enjoy, you are probably going to be stuck there, at least that is my experience because sadly no one wants to work in those services with challenging behaviours. I also discussed this issue with my colleagues before discussing with my manager, they also stated the same sentiments to the manager, and some of my colleagues had been waiting several months for an update on being moved. If cover staff come into that service, they will most likely relay their experience with other colleagues, and therefore word gets around which services are challenging and which ones pleasant. I know this is an assumption, however if I worked with cover, some had stated that they would not like to work at this service again. 

I do not blame LDC for all these issues, this just seems to be the nature of working in more challenging environments. Support isn't going to be available as there just isn't the staff to facilitate it without it coming with an expense. I did not want to resign, but I also did not want to wait for months in hopes of being moved without luck and have my mental health decline any further.

if you’ve never worked in care before, do not bother applying. Please. You will be thrown in at the deep end and expected to deal with it all without help leaving you feel small and insecure.
WHERE DO I START? 
Let’s try the beginning
•Training, 5 days sat in front of a power point listening to a woman talk who by the way has never worked 1 day in care in her life and another 5 days in service where you “shadow”. During this shadowing period you get to observe staff whilst they’re with their service user. I spent my entire time shadowing watching tv and being taught absolutely nothing. Literally. 
•So after the useless training you start pretty much immediately, you will be shoved into a service that nobody else wants to work in, not one that suits you or the service user(s). Chances are the service you’ll be put into will house service users with extremely aggressive and violent behaviours, instead of putting trained, experienced staff here, they will put you in there. And you will be told to suck it up.
•Should a problem arise, you will call the manager is desperate hope someone can help you, no they can’t. Chances are they won’t even pick up the phone. 
•If you are “lucky” enough to be working with another member of staff who is trained and experienced, should you need their help, you will not receive it. They will be playing candy crush on their phone whilst they smoke their 30th cigarette of the day.
*** To sum it all up this company is a JOKE. You will be left to yourself with no adequate training which can often put you and your service user in danger. Management are lazy and useless and make many empty promises to try and get what they want from you (usually over time or covering shifts other staff can’t be bothered to turn up to). AVOID LDC. The pay is also very bad for the stress you have to go through. Do not fall for anything they advertise or say. 5 people I did training with have quit and I have been here less than 3 months.

Erm where do you start....often you will get no support from management when issues arise or eventually when you have had enough and ask repeatedly to move service due to ongoing issues. When you say you are going to look for another job their attitude was they either don't believe you or don't care and yet once you have handed your notice in you are basically begged to stay. You can be moved  from the service you are based at with no notice to cover absent or non existent staff at other challenging services where you are expected to lone work even if you have no or minimal knowledge of the individual you are supposed to support,not only do you have to accept this but it also impacts the staff and individuals at the service you were working at originally. Services are often running on such low staff numbers you are put at risk and it makes it impossible for the individuals you are supposed to be supporting to leave the service for activities .....Breaking up staff teams that work well both for the individuals being supported and the staff teams due to taking on more sometimes very challenging individuals without actually having a staff team for them.
Basically money talks and comes first...decent care for the individuals supported and respect for staff a very poor second.
Oh and on the subject of money you will frequently be paid incorrectly due to the totally unfit for purpose clocking in system used .
I can't understand why so many staff escape and then go back .....I'd literally have to be on the streets before I'd consider it...

I have read many negative reports on LDC and unfortunately there is a lot that rings true.
From my personal perspective I found your were near the end of the week and the new rota was set to start on the following Monday the new rota was not published so planning any sort of personal life was impossible when I approached my service lead and or my area manager to find out when it would be published the lack of any sort of positive response was disrespectful!
The company promotes anybody who make the right noises and these people lord it up and take great delight between themselves disrespecting each other.
You can get to work and find you have been redeployed to another house which is often to the detriment of the people we were caring for causing behaviours and disruption to their lives.
You should be prepared to work long hours and be expected to do meaningless activities with the service users to make it look good on paper. If you get behaviours from the Service users you need to record those behaviours but got no advice around the behaviours to offer any form of positive support.
All in all I felt unsupported and under valued and negativity was the way that your service lead would control you.
Such a shame because it should have been a good company to work for but sadly nothing near that in reality.
I was meant to be offered the chance to do an exit questionnaire which never happened........

The management fails to act professionally and bullies its staff. Frequently staff are forced to work additional hours the same day (usually because a member of management has failed to provide cover). Like wise their ability to conduct respectful conversations with members of the public is extremely lacking.... The staff also are consistent in one place and if your 'NEW' and they don't like you that's it your gone!! management consistently bicker amongst other management about members of staff  that are new to the job and are just getting there barrings, they don't provide the correct support or guidance to when they put you on your first shift your just expected to get on with it, even when it comes down to 'personal care'... the training is supposedly 2 weeks, which consisted of power-point presentations... the lady conduction this is absolutely amazing can't fault her! but again was cut short and expected to go into service, and know how to deal with challenging behaviour.  
It has been noted that some staff were requested to work a 12 hour shift and then immediately begin a 12 hour night shift. No breaks allowed during either of these periods, simply because they believe going for a cigarette is classed as your break... may i ask what about people who don't smoke?
overall this is a company that doesn't care or have respect for its employees, and if a job in care is what your after, id look else where!

I have known about LDC and have known people that work/have worked there for many years, but never "taken the plunge" to go and work with them.
I applied for an administration position in early 2019 and had a great experience during the interview process.
I was given the opportunity to support the management team and it helped me in my personal growth - I was having some serious health issues.
My workload was spread evenly, at the start it was a good amount and once I have got used to the company and it's systems, I was given more workload and it was always checked that I am not overworked. I had regular supervisions. 
My line manager was extremely supportive - they would provide me with last minute urgent holidays, if I had to attend hospital appointments. 
The team was excellent - very dynamic and supportive. They would embrace my quirkiness and did not challenge it a lot.
It is amazing that the Directors were always present in the office in one way or another, always supporting their employees, something 
you do not see very often.
I had to sadly resign to concentrate on my own personal health, and nothing to do with the company. 
I cannot recommend them enough.

The only thing I believe needs improvement is and lack of managers, but the company can’t do much apart from advertise to help the short staff situation and people just don’t have the patience for that so then that person leaves which escalates the situation more.

LDC always provides surveys that are sent out to the staff members and the staff member are entitled to give their opinion of what’s working and what isn’t working, which personally I think it’s great!

Half of these reviews are previous staff staff members who have probably lied to LDC and not been honest with them but are happy to jump in with everyone else when there’s something negative to jump on. 

This is a great company to start with when you are feeling care is the next journey in your life to achieve . 

Take it from an honest staff member who is still at LDC, LDC is a great company but people just need to give it respect and patience towards the company , I don’t regret it at all.

Was hired as a business support administrator in ‘Head Office’. Salary fair for the job but the job lacked any actual substance and was basically a glorified lackey for the Chief Administrative Officer, picking up odd bits and pieces of work here and there which had nothing to do with business support, honestly the most boring job I’ve ever had. The staff turnover for this one job role in particular was incredibly high with the job still going out to advert numerous times in the months after. I just about managed to find the strength to turn up for the role for a few weeks before leaving. The turnover in this one role was so high and was even laughed about in the other office whilst doing some training which didn’t fill me with much confidence. One wonders why questions haven’t been asked surrounding the turnover of the role in question and why numerous people start and then leave just weeks into the role. All other staff encountered were lovely but I  really wouldn’t recommend working in “head office” due to the cavalier attitude and hostility of ‘Chief’ members of staff who believe themselves to be directors
