Micromanaging – If you are a person of colour, don't even bother. Racism, bigotry, microaggressions. Team members talking behind backs. Terrible work culture. 

As a person of colour, I experienced behaviour I can only describe as racism and microaggressions. It wasn’t always loud or obvious — it was the constant small things: the tone people used, the way I was spoken to, being watched and scrutinised for things others did freely, and being made to feel like my normal behaviour was a problem. I felt singled out and judged in a way that didn’t feel fair or consistent.

The management style is intense and controlling. Instead of being supported to learn, you get overloaded and then criticised for not moving fast enough — even when basic processes are slowed down by unnecessary checking and constant second-guessing. Priorities get changed, then you’re blamed for not prioritising correctly. It creates a “set up to fail” environment where you’re anxious all day trying not to be misunderstood or misrepresented.

There’s also very little psychological safety. If you raise concerns, it feels like it gets used against you rather than solved. People smile to your face and then messages get sent about you behind the scenes. The atmosphere is tense, suspicious, and undermining.

Overall, it’s not a supportive workplace. It affected my mental health and wellbeing significantly. I would not recommend this environment to anyone, and especially not to people of colour who want a fair, respectful, professional team culture.

When I started it was a great friendly atmosphere with a good balance but over time that changed. Budget cuts and management changes had a serious impact and made it a less than desirable place to work.
I worked there for a number of years in social care and it took excessive hours and absolute slogging for years just to get to a bottom level management job, which they then undercut the salary by £8k less than the previous manager - not an issue when you love your job but then having to do 10hr days with no break just to stay on top of the workload is not appropriate. I gave up after a shorter time than I would have liked and stepped down.
Management is incompetant and absolutely shocking over the past few years and most mid and high level managers are now consultants because MKC cannot retain any decent staff anymore. They waste absolutely millions on unneeded rubbish and by tying everyone up in self imposed regulations and then expect staff to pick up all the pieces. It takes months and years to get anything done and they have meetings about meetings about meetings that went on 3 years before, all because managers constantly change and no one left has a clue what work has been done before, or they just wont use it.
I was loyal for a long time, trying to always see their side and the reasons behind what goes on but eventually I realised there is no excuse and their incompetence was putting people in danger so was forced to walk away.

A typical day at work is to assist people out of bed and then assist with their personal care, breakfast, medication chat to them listen to them make them laugh if possible to  make sure they are as comfortable as possible that they have every thing they need some I even go back for their lunch call.

I learned a lot since I started working here training very good I love the job I do, I have loved all the people I have cared for since I started, but unfortunately things are changing. mostly due to the cutbacks we are told we are taking a cut in pay and benefits I have also heard there are more changes to hours and shifts on the horizon .don't feel as supported as we used to be by management, they don't keep us informed its all coming out in small bits of what's the next change office manager don't attend meetings to inform.

when you feel they are being let down by the way the Healthcare system i.e. GPs have changed in the way its more the thought of costs before patients health these days.

the most enjoyable part of my job as a carer are the people I help when they are happy to see me and when I leave them content and smiling knowing I have done all I can to help.
the warm feelings I get makes it the most rewarding job I have ever done

A days work is unpredictable the my work load arrive from phone calls, email, letter, of a visit to the office from a client. I check the mail for the new work load and at the same time I have to be to take on additional work or enquiries from other department of external organisation such as mortgage company, solicitors,
 I have regular meeting with my manager and our solicitors to review the legality of  complex cases that may require legal representation our clarify the clauses to be included in the responses. I prefer to communicate if possible by telephone to most customers for less complex cases in which  I can obtain  to get detail information to make a decision for the case. I also arrange agreement and explain the services to leaseholder who are unclear of the terms of their lease or if fallen behind with payments.
I may be given additional task by my manager to research a case or sent to a meeting. In order to meet target I have to prioritise my work in my diary and set reminders as well as setting up spreadsheet as it is essential to comply the time in line with legislation to serve notices and respond to enquiries. I also have to answer enquiries to consultation, service charge, major work.

I have gained experience in working HR, learning the processes and policies within this environment.  

A typical day at work would be managing the inbox's for the department, dealing with Freedom of Information requests, Ad Hoc Requests, report running, completing surveys, providing statistics from the SAP system and manipulating it to show figures for clients, HR and other eternal agencies.  Keeping the MKC structures up to date, and maintenance of the ESS/MSS system, which includes taking calls on the Helpdesk.Whilst working in this role I have gained experience in training other members of staff, organising their workloads, reviewing work processes and time management.The hardest part of the role was working with figures and using formulas on spreadsheets.I enjoyed working within a team, and learning how to use SAP and creating reports to show business statistics to help guide managers and HR professionals to make improvements within the Council.

What is the best part of working at the company?
It looks good on your cv. Recent cutbacks have left departments short-staffed for months on end so great place to work if you enjoy pressure.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It pays less than other councils for the same job.
Temp managers using up payroll budget and not having a long term interest in the job or their staff. Short staffed, everyone is stressed out, feels undervalued by temp management and there is rarely a chance of progression as temp managers don't like promoting experienced staff as they are harder to control.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Some lovely colleagues work here, doing their best to support each other as managers have little time to motivate their teams.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Constant pressure all day, no time to learn or ever catch up on the back log of work caused by being short staffed.

I worked here for many years, let's get on with telling you what you will go into... 

You will have a working pattern explaining your rotated days to work and you rotated days off. So if you have 3 days off you have to work one of your days off as a cover day. So you only get 2 days off. Saturday is a cover day if someone goes off sick and it's your day off, you are suppose to go in and wait to see if someone goes off sick... this is not The case. The team leaders will just rota you into work. Terrible working pattern and you always feel like you are at work. 

Team leaders are very horrible talk behind your back to other team members... 

There is always someone mum, sister, aunt that work on the same team which causes a lot of back stabbing. 

This department is very corrupt when you are raising serious issues and will cover anything up. Big bosses do not listen to frontline staff and back managers up. 

There is other department in MK council that work more fair so stay clear from this department.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Pay and enhanced payments for those in front line roles are sometimes the first affected during times of economic cuts. But somehow there always seems to be enough funding to add another layer of management 3 salary grades above their immediate subordinates.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Generally Positive and sipportive amongst peers. Some Good Supervisory management, though upper management can seem a bit aloof at times but they will engage when necessary I.e. during service changes and pay restructuring. 

There always seems to be someone on sick leave,  some more than others.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
No one day is the same, a good place to gain a variety of professional experiences.

Have worked in various social care roles in MKC since 2001.

The working day can be quite random, responding to emergency calls from vulnerable adults in the community.

I have broadened my experience immensely during my time at MKC.

Unfortunately, at times there have been cutbacks in some services so I have had to "think out of the box" and move on to other roles I may not have previously considered. However, I feel I have benefited greatly from making the jump.  Most of the team are very supportive apart from the odd "nitpicker", but there's usually one of those wherever you work.

Management can be somewhat "procedural", but I suppose you know where you are at least with that style of approach.

To make sure that all plant is running by visual and BMSsystems.Effiecently and economicaly as possible .Also dealing with reactive work and PPM work throughout the day.                                                                                Management meetings to discuss the work to be carried out in the following year and any outstanding work is completed within the time scale.
Being able to work and dicuss issues of how to minimize breakdowns and to prevent them.To work as  a team safely PPE
Waiting for parts from suppliers this is the most hardest part of the job
The most rewarding part of the job is on leaving knowing that the plant will shut down when required and restart in the morning, and the building is secure
