The culture within mirus has unfortunately remained a concern over a number of years. Many staff, past and present, have expressed frustration about an environment that often feels top-down and unsupportive, with limited space for open dialogue or constructive challenge.

When a new temporary director was appointed in 2023, it raised significant concerns among teams. Her leadership approach was perceived by many as contributing to a culture of finger-pointing and blame, which only deepened anxiety among staff and undermined confidence in the organisation’s direction.

In early 2024, the departure or apparent phasing out of some highly respected senior leaders further impacted morale. Staff have questioned how these decisions were made, and whether individuals who had made a positive contribution were being pushed out rather than supported. During this time, I became aware of at least two area managers who were, in the view of many, unfairly forced out. These changes appeared to reinforce a growing blame culture, where accountability was not shared, and senior staff were held responsible for wider organisational failings.

Concerns raised internally often seem to go unaddressed or are met with resistance, and many feel their voices are not being heard. This has created a workplace atmosphere that feels more focused on managing criticism than on genuine reflection and improvement.

There are many passionate and committed individuals working across mirus who want to make a positive difference. However, for that to be sustainable, the organisation’s leadership must take active steps to rebuild trust, foster psychological safety, and move away from reactive, blame-led management.

Love mirus, love the people I support and the staff and management team I work with are second to none.  I have worked in previous care companies and really praise the work the management staff team do.  They really do care and totally take on board the best interests of the people we all support.  

If anyone was looking for a carer change I cannot comment enough that they need to apply to mirus and relaunch their career if they are fed up where they currently work.  I have had great training since joining and the opportunities to acquire new experiences and skills have been excellent.  But the main thing for me I have been supported throughout this journey.

I read some negative comments below.  I was really shocked and feel this is a select group of the normal negative type of people that great employers occasionally have to burden.  This really I promise you is not how everyone see's mirus and its management team.  I have great respect for them.  I have even met the CEO and Op's Director, great people.

I hope this inspires you all to think of a job in care, its a great field and if you are looking for someone special to work for go mirus all the way.

There is no such thing as working a typical day in Mirus, because of the nature of the work every day varies. Being a support worker when you first start can be quite daunting if like myself you have had no previous work experience in the healthcare sector. Mirus fully supported me as a new starter by giving me a thorough induction into the houses I work in and put me on as many shadow shifts as I wanted/needed until I felt completely comfortable. 

I am incredibly lucky with management as both my team manager and assistant manager have supported me through all my training and been highly understanding regarding needed time off short notice for any personal life problems. I receive regular supervisions where I am given the encouragement and motivation I need to ensure I remain positive in those challenging times as a support worker.

Like any job that deals with people it can be quite challenging. Service users may refuse support, not take a liking to you or display challenging behaviour. Mirus have an excellent staff training department which ensures that you are equipped with the knowledge needed to tackle those difficult days. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is supporting people into the community so they have the best quality of like possible.

Awful place to work, you may be lucky and work with some brilliant clients, but management like to over manage and belittle staff and it does ruin any enjoyment from the job. Work is hard at times, it's mentally draining mostly, what you don't need is uptight and disruptive management constantly emailing or ringing to ask you to stay on, or try to guilt you into doing a double sleep in. (It happens all the time, I did a triple sleep in , total of 78 hours working over Christmas) and if you dare flag anything up you'll be victimised. They will force you to go on holiday with clients, with false promises of pay, i went abroad for a week, with a client and staff member, they promised we'd get paid for full week, 24 hours a day, so would have been paid 1680 pounds approximately for week away. They paid us 250 pounds each, the staff that stayed behind got paid more. And when we brought it up they said we had a free holiday, ask yourself when was the last time you took a severely disabled person abroad as part of your holiday....the company is a joke.
Just avoid them, if you want a care job look literally anywhere else. 

Working at Mirus has been a fantastic experience, especially when it comes to career progression. The organisation is dedicated to helping staff grow professionally, with plenty of opportunities to learn and develop new skills. From day one, I felt welcomed and supported by the team, which has really helped me move forward in my role.

The job is hands-on, and you’re directly involved in helping individuals live more independently. Whether it’s supporting with community activities or assisting with everyday tasks like cooking, budgeting, household chores, and managing paperwork, you can really see the difference you’re making in their lives. It’s rewarding to watch people gain confidence and independence.

That said, this job isn’t for everyone. You need to be committed to helping individuals build their skills, and paperwork is a big part of the role as things need to be accurately documented every day. The shifts can be long and the work can be challenging, so not everyone is cut out for it. But for those who are, the reward of seeing the positive impact you have makes it all worthwhile. Plus, the longer shifts mean more time off to spend with family or friends, which is a nice bonus!

I've worked for mirus for about 18 months and have enjoyed every second so far. The teams I work are highly committed, and are always very supportive. The organisation really tries to put the things in place to support people to develop and achieve their potential. One impressive aspect of the organisation is that although mistakes will inevitably be made; there is a real willingness to positively learn from the mistakes. 

The learning opportunities available recognise that to support great employees, you need learning that extends beyond just the basic, core topics. I really feel the organisation is trying to continually develop on a journey, and isn't afraid of trying to break new ground.

The work is demanding and challenging at times, but the satisfaction from helping and supporting people to improve themselves or others is a great pay-back. 

My manager is extremely supportive, providing a high level of freedom, trust, and support when required. A brief chat can sometimes make big challenges feel a lot more manageable.

I’ve worked at Mirus since March 2020, beginning as a community hero, helping out during the first period of Covid-19. The staff and management welcomed me with open arms and I couldn’t have asked for a nicer group of work colleagues. I shortly changed my contract over to a permanent part time role as a support worker which has helped me to grow massively as a person, from the different experiences and opportunities available to the new skills and outlooks on the world of work that I had never been exposed to before. The company has guided me so much throughout my time here, I have now taken a full time contract on within my service. Not only have I seen the PWS benefit massively from the service itself, I have benefitted myself and learnt so much during this short year. I have, and will continue to support the company and my colleagues, it is a pleasure to work along side such caring and devolved individuals. 

When I secured a job with this company I found myself just chucked into the deep end with no support. The training is good but there is no work life balance as I am expected to work well over my hours on low pay. The manager is on the sick as are many of the other support workers in the house I work in. 

I took one client away on their holidays for 7 days and received very little pay for this; I have a friend who works for another company in Cardiff and all staff are paid for every hour they work when away on client hols! Staff working for this company also have a bonus at Christmas time too. 

There is an unhealthy culture of controlling staff from the senior management and were told that the board of trustees will not listen to  any staff concerns or complaints.

This was the most depressing job I have ever had and I am currently waiting to start with another company in Cardiff.  

The only upside to this company is that many employees like me DO genuinely care about the clients.

I worked for Mirus for over 4 months as a Community Hero during first wave of Pandemic and worked at Various locations, from day 1 I was treated with Diversity, Dignity & Respect also I was treated as equal by all staff, Staff were friendly & I was included in Decisions, my feedback was accepted to help improve things, I was offered all required training, communication was open & honest, I found management approachable even when I fed back things I thought mirus could improve on and it was accepted - during the time I worked at Mirus I was made to feel welcome, valued and enjoyed working there and left on good terms and will hope to go back one day and I can also say I found HR Team approachable and excellent with communication I also commend the professional attitude of my Managers & Area Managers ! Mirus is a great company that offers all the training you may need for your new role.  Though sometimes challenging the rewards far outweigh the negatives. You will get to make a huge difference to a lot of amazing individuals all of whom have special needs.  You will have to use your initiative and be able to work within a team. You will have to be able to follow directions and stick to the care plans.  You will have to arrange doctors/dental appointments along with finding ways to enhance your service users life.  I.e. activities,  holidays etc you will be expected to do household chores such as cleaning,  laundry and cooking.  You will also be responsible for ordering medication and administering.  This may seem like a big responsibility but I promise you will be very happy in your work
