As a Support Worker, you will be given a caseload of clients and a typical day includes checking on your clients, managing paperwork (clients' files), managing medication (which the clients can and will refuse every now and then, causing a lot of problems)  helping clean up the flats of your clients, going out with them for appointments -medical, bank, etc- and offering emotional support when needed. This can change from day to day but overall, this is what you will be doing. 
The shifts change every week, which makes it very difficult to have a routine outside work. The hardest shift is the late shift (it finish around 9:30-10:00 pm) because you will find yourself alone working with a group of clients that could be very unpredictable, especially when they refuse to take their medication, which makes the situation very unsettling. But sadly you are expected to "deal with it" and you will be treated like an idiot for being worried about your personal safety by other members of the staff or Team Leaders/Managers if you express any concerns about the lone working policy. 

The hardest part of the job: Late Shifts, you never know what could happen when dealing with your clients so you have to build a lot of resilience and you will have to develop a lot of patience since your coworkers sometimes won't share your views/ways of working and they will have this attitude of acting like a hero, exposing themselves to danger and therefore, the whole team. Also, dealing with Managers/Team Leaders that expect you to work the same way they do, even if you offer better solutions or better ways of doing things in order to be more efficient. 
Management: They won't listen to the needs of the staff. They want you to believe they do but they lack true leadership and empathy when it comes to understanding the team. I experienced veiled sexism and never saw the management taking a strong position against racist comments made by clients against members of the staff that ended up leaving because they never felt supported. 
Workplace culture: Good intentions, good plans, good ideas to an extend. Realistic? No. 
The most enjoyable part of the job is the relationships you build with your clients and the slow progress you might have if you nourish every day with little baby steps your bond with your clients. It's very rewarding when you see how all your efforts have an impact on someone's life and how you can encourage them to be the best version of themselves. Unfortunately, the hours, the way management deals with situations, and how you are left on your own sometimes kills the motivation little by little. 


There really isn't such a thing as a typical day at Mill House, because there is such a diverse mix of clientele it means that literally anything can happen. Mill House is a stage one hostel, meaning those who reside here have a history of either drink or drug misuse and mental health issues - or they have all three. Primarily my role consists of assisting my clients to gain access to a Drink and/or Drug Rehabilitation Centre or Detox Unit, this is dependant on the free will of the client. Also, as a Move-On Project, we are here to assist clients with finding more permamnent accommodation.
I have learned a multitude of skills whilst I have been at the hostel, as well as gaining certificates for a variety of attributes that I have been trained on - all of which are noted on my CV as there is many of them. My colleagues have been very helpful in my first year, the years of experience they have between them has always been on offer for me anytime I needed to ask them anything, I have also been touched by their comments that I can more than hold my own, in my role, at a place of Mill House's reputation.
The hardest part of my job is having to evict people because it is widely known that Mill House is almost a "last chance saloon" - meaning that if someone is evicted from the hostel then they are made aware that the council will no longer have a duty to find them any kind of accommodation. I cannot actually pick any part of my job that is the most enjoyable, as I have loved every minute of being at a place like Mill House because of it's diversity.

I was a client of Two Saints in 2009 and developed an interest in helping clients who were worse off than myself. Two saints clients include those whith addiction/ either alcohol or substance missuse. 
I was with Two Saints because I became homeless at very short notice due to divorce. But counted myself very lucky for only having homelessness as my only problem. 
Being in that enviroment gave me the understanding to help those less fortunate than myself. However, due to a complete lack of academic qualifications and basic IT skills I could only help in a voluntary capacity.
 Glad I took that opportunity because I gained some very good practical experience with them. Now I have the chance to update my IT slills with Chichester College I am also seeking employment with any of the homeless service providers in Sussex or Hampshire. One of my roles as a volunteer was a caretaker/ facillitator in the clients IT suite in Mill House Kinston Road Portsmouth. No IT skills needed on my part because I was only there to monitor in case of any innappropriate activity on the computers. But my complete lack of IT skills was the driving factor to make myself gain the IT skills needed to improve my chances for employment. At the risk of seeming big headed. I'm self driven and doing everything I can to add to my skills and improve my own chances.

Always interesting working in homelessness services but can be hard work. Expect to do jobs you would not normally associate with support working - it's not a typical desk job. Lots of cleaning, moving furniture, and other physical jobs. Oh, and evictions - Two Saints seem very happy to evict clients.

People who work for the company are generally good people and going to work is enjoyable but there is also a bad culture to the organisation, which at times is quite unprofessional. Management will have it in for certain staff members and make their work life difficult but allow others too much freedom.Some very lazy staff members cause more work for everyone else. Would be an excellent place to work if everyone put the effort in but even one person will bring a team down.

The pay is good compared to other companies in this sector and they do provide a lot of training, though they do need to work on how they induct new staff members, who often feel like they have been thrown in at the deep end.

Staff shortages are always apparent and management will ask staff to do overtime from time to time. Taking up this overtime seems to cause stress to some staff members but I never felt forced to take the overtime - if they cannot find anyone they will just get agency workers in (who are, quite often, very poor).

-Bullying culture 
-Untrained and unskilled management (who are also bullies)
-Management will scream and shout at you and use profanities 
-No support whatsoever even in extremely stressful and dangerous situations 
-Although there are polices and procedures in place, these are rarely adhered to and client favouritism is rife
- Everything is a blame game and human error doesn't exist in their world
-Absolutely horrendous turnover of staff in the Fareham and Gosport area due to poor management 
Although this job may look attractive and the service does help some clients, the organisation very often enables client's behaviours and addictions and does not benefit them in the long term. Two Saints would rather put staff and other clients at risk than take any loss of money.
I cannot stress enough how awful this company is, do not be fooled by anything they say. This job will massively impact on your mental health and HR or management will not do anything to support you. They do not care about staff or their well-being. 
There have been a large number of complaints put in regarding the treatment of staff but these have been completely ignored by HR and the poor management and bullying has been allowed to continue. 
I have genuinely never worked for such an atrocious company.



I manage 3 sites withinthe company in Portsmouth so physically have to work from each site throughout the working week.  I regulary flex my working hours to cover S/L and A/L withinthe staff tem to insure continuety of support for the clints. I compelte staff attendance sheets, back to work interviews, and any staff related issues. I have been part of a capability route for employees not emetings standards, recrutment, indcution, mentoring and supporting for all staff.  I oversee reviews of clients and deal with any antisocial behaviuor from clients.  I manage properties delivery housing management, maintenance request budget holding, to insure H+S standards are met and client satisfaction. I regulary joint work and communication with a varity of service throughout the city, adult mental health service, drug and alcohol services, GP, medical staff, housing staff, contractors, Portsmouth city council etc.

The hardest part of my job is insuring all services are covered and working to required standard when staff are stretched, sick and on A/L.

To see our clients moved on successfully regaining independence and gettin on with their  lives.

I worked for two saints for over a year and always felt that if your face didn't fit then staff and mangers would make u feel as your not part of the team. They where very unsupportive if clients where violent or threating towards you no support would be offered, u would be left to lone work in some very difficult situations which would leave you on edge throughout your shift. When Clients would kick off and staff would handover the events of the day or night they would then rush off home leaving u to deal with unpredictable situations not knowing if your safe which would leave you under alot of stress. I did try to talk this through with management thinking they would be supportive as i felt that they would seen as they had said in the past they are there if u need them but would get told if u can't handle it leave. Don't get me wrong some days are enjoyable when your round clients and doing activities with them and some staff are great but lone working your left very vulnerable not just from threats and violents but if anything was to happen your be left to carry the can as you have noone watching your back I feel it's better to work with other staff round you for support and safety. 

Two Saints are a great company to get experience in working in homelessness and with people with complex needs. They have great training opportunities and plenty of opportunity for advancement within the organisation. Whether it be moving into management or gaining experience working with lots of different needs. The pay is about average for the industry, unfortunately most people in social/care sector are not paid enough for what they do for society! The work can be demanding, emotionally and sometimes long hours, but unfortunately this is the nature of working with people. There is provision for dealing with emotional support in regards to employee assistance programmes and regular supervision from managers. I would definitely recommend Two Saints if you're looking for a challenging but rewarding role where you will have the opportunity to help people to make real change in their lives.

Overall the organisations aims are commendable however in practice its not carried out due to the lack of staff and the micromanagement of its staff on the ground. There seems to be a focus on middle management rather than a focus on supporting the staff that are doing a difficult job with unmanagable work loads. When this is raised the response often given is what's the issue and a focus on blame of the things staff members are doing wrong rather than questioning maybe the system is not working for staff and it is unmanagable due to the lack of staff numbers. Workload unreasonable expections from mangment who will move the goal posts and adjust things to suit the agenda and to ultimately save themselves with the workers on the ground left to face the consequences with an expections and overall view that the high staff turnover is normal and OK within the organisation. 

I have worked in several companies over 25 years span, but two saints is the worst. The management are simply appalling, they talk to you like you are in a concentration camp. Master to slave approach. Their approach is very demeaning and disrespectful. My line manager is the worst manager anyone can work with, talks down at you, racist, defensive, lacks any moral and talks to staff like they don't count.   The management do not care how you feel or the stress you go through at work, which is often humongous to deal with residents being racists, druggist, alcoholic, always using the worst swear language at you and attack staff almost every time.  Management would say if you are scared of being attacked then stay in your house, after all people get attacked on the street. You are left to lone work with residents with bad mental issues and often lone working with no back up, all they say is, call the Police when they attack you. When this guys attack you, nothing happens, the management says, we all get attacked at work so live with it.
