Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced and highly organized Construction Manager to take responsibility for our portfolio of small works projects across industrial and commercial sites,
This is a varied, hands-on role managing civil engineering and groundworks projects typically valued between £10,000 and £200,000. You will oversee several live and upcoming projects at different stages, coordinating our directly employed workforce, materials, plant, subcontractors, programmes and site documentation.
This is not a desk based management position. You will be closely involved in the practical delivery of each project, attending pre-start meetings, planning works, visiting sites, resolving problems and giving our site teams the information and support they need to work safely and productively.
The successful candidate will be comfortable managing a fast-moving programme of approximately five to ten projects per month, normally using teams of between two and six operatives.
It is an excellent opportunity for an experienced civils professional who enjoys variety, responsibility and being close to the work. You will have genuine ownership of your projects and the autonomy to plan and deliver them effectively.
Key responsibilities
You will take responsibility for projects from initial handover and pre-start planning through to completion, including:
- Reviewing project information, drawings, specifications and scopes of work before mobilisation.
- Attending client meetings, site visits, pre-start meetings and progress meetings.
- Developing practical programmes of work and coordinating several projects simultaneously.
- Planning and allocating directly employed labour across multiple sites.
- Organising materials, plant, equipment, subcontractors and deliveries to suit the programme.
- Ensuring site teams have the correct drawings, information, permits and documentation before work begins.
- Planning site logistics, access arrangements, working areas, welfare and material storage.
- Carrying out setting out, marking out and basic site measurement where required.
- Visiting live projects regularly to support supervisors and operatives, monitor progress and resolve technical or practical issues.
- Clarifying scope requirements and managing changes or additional works with the client and commercial team.
- Keeping labour, plant and materials working efficiently and identifying potential delays before they affect delivery.
- Monitoring workmanship, productivity, programme performance and compliance with project requirements.
- Ensuring health and safety documentation, RAMS, permits, inspection records, site paperwork and handover information are accurate and available when required.
- Liaising professionally with clients, site management, suppliers, subcontractors and internal colleagues.
- Supporting the commercial management of projects by recording variations, additional works, delays and changes in scope.
- Assisting with valuations, cost information and final account records as required.
- Managing snagging, completion, handover and close-out documentation.
- Maintaining clear and timely records for every project.
.You will be an experienced civil engineering or groundworks professional with a strong understanding of how work is practically planned and delivered on live industrial sites.
You may currently be working as a Small Works Manager, Construction Manager, Site Manager or Senior Site Manager and be ready to take greater ownership of a varied portfolio of projects.
To be considered, you should have:
- A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience within civil engineering and groundworks.
- Demonstrable experience working on live industrial, manufacturing, commercial, utilities or similarly controlled sites.
- Experience managing directly employed groundworks or civil engineering teams, typically comprising two to six operatives.
- The ability to plan and manage multiple short-duration projects simultaneously—potentially five to ten projects per month.
- Strong practical knowledge of groundworks, drainage, concrete works, foundations, external works and general civil engineering activities.
- Experience coordinating labour, materials, plant, subcontractors and site logistics.
- The ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
- Practical setting-out and measurement experience.
- A good understanding of construction health and safety requirements, RAMS, permits and site documentation.
- The confidence to attend client meetings and represent the business professionally.
- Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to make sound decisions and remain calm when programmes, site conditions or scopes change.
- Good IT skills and the ability to maintain accurate project records.
- A full UK driving licence.
Relevant qualifications such as SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid,IOSH and a civil engineering or construction management qualification would be advantageous.
Please note: This position requires proven industrial civil engineering and groundworks experience. Candidates whose experience is limited primarily to speculative housebuilding or residential development will not have the relevant background for this role.
