ABOUT THE JOB
To program, set up, operate, and maintain CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines (such as mills, lathes, routers, or machining centres) to produce precision components to specification, quality standards, and production schedules. The role combines programming capability, machine setup expertise, and hands-on operation to ensure efficient, accurate, and safe manufacturing.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Programming
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications to generate CNC programs.
- Use CAM software (e.g., Fusion 360, Mastercam, SolidWorks CAM) or manual programming (G-code / M-code) to create efficient toolpaths.
- Optimize programs for speed, feed rate, tool life, and material usage to reduce cycle times and improve productivity.
- Edit and modify existing programs as required for design changes or process improvements.
Setting Up
- Select and fit appropriate cutting tools, tool holders, workholding fixtures, and jigs.
- Load and set workpieces, align datums, and establish zero points / work offsets accurately.
- Input or transfer programs to the machine controller and verify parameters.
- Conduct trial runs and first-off inspections to confirm dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish meet specifications.
- Adjust settings, speeds, and feeds to achieve required quality and output.
Operation & Production
- Monitor machine operation throughout production runs, checking for wear, breakage, or drift.
- Measure components using precision equipment (calipers, micrometers, gauges, height gauges, CMM if applicable) and record results.
- Maintain quality records and complete production documentation accurately.
- Identify and resolve minor issues or faults; escalate technical or mechanical problems promptly.
- Follow production schedules to meet delivery targets and minimize downtime.
Health, Safety & Maintenance
- Comply with all health and safety regulations, company policies, and safe operating procedures at all times.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure a clean, tidy, and hazard-free work area.
- Perform routine machine maintenance: cleaning, lubrication, checking coolant levels, and reporting worn or faulty parts.
- Assist with machine calibration and periodic servicing as required.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
Essential
- Proven experience programming, setting, and operating CNC machines (mills, lathes, or multi-axis centres).
- Good understanding of G-code / M-code and ability to edit programs manually.
- Competent reading and interpretation of 2D engineering drawings and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Experience using precision measuring tools and quality inspection techniques.
- Strong awareness of health and safety in a manufacturing environment.
- Good numerical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Desirable
- Qualification in Engineering, Machining, or CNC Operations (e.g., City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ Level 2/3).
- Proficiency with CAM software and CAD systems.
- Experience with specific control systems (e.g., Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Haas).
- Knowledge of a range of materials: steel, aluminium, brass, plastics, etc.
- Experience with multi-axis machining (4/5-axis).
- Previous quality assurance or continuous improvement experience.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum: 2–3 years’ relevant experience in a CNC environment.
- Preferred: Relevant vocational qualification or apprenticeship in Engineering / Machining.
- Training: Willingness to undertake further training in programming, new machinery, or quality standards.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Factory / workshop environment; may involve exposure to noise, dust, coolant, and metal swarf.
- Standing for long periods and lifting/moving components (up to 20kg with assistance).
- Occasional overtime or shift work to meet production demands.
