What does this role involve?

Encouraging individuals to become active members of their local and wider communities, building confidence, independence and meaningful daily routines. Supporting people in all aspects of their daily lives including cooking, cleaning, shopping, budgeting and maintaining their homes.

This role involves supporting individuals to develop practical life skills, with a strong focus on cooking and shared meal preparation, enabling them to build confidence in the kitchen and enjoy nutritious, home-cooked meals. You will work as part of a team to have a positive impact on the lives of the people we support, helping them achieve their goals and live fulfilling, independent lives.

You will use clear and effective communication with colleagues, family members and other professionals, ensuring that person-centred support plans are followed, accurate and up to date, while promoting health, safety and wellbeing.

About the person we support

Donna is a 50 years old lady living in the Bedlington area, on a bus route. Donna has a diagnosis of learning disability, borderline personality disorder and epilepsy.

Donna needs 2-1 support when accessing the community and has a second team member for parts of the day to enable her to get out and about. Donna is a sociable lady and needs support to find her place in the local community. Donna needs support to maintain social relationships as she does not always understand the social niceties.

Donna is very able and enjoys keeping her home clean and tidy. Donna likes to help and it is important that she feels valued as this will help build her self-esteem.

Donna is seeking a female support worker who is calm and able to plant seeds without taking over. Donna’s Support is between 07:30 and 22:00 hours and is split into two shorter shifts. Donna’s ideal support worker will have experience in supporting people with Borderline personality disorder who can present behaviours of concern at times.

What skills and experience do you need to work with Donna?

A positive, patient and motivated approach to supporting others
Strong communication skills, with the ability to encourage and engage individuals
An understanding of person-centred care and Active Support
Resilience and the ability to remain calm when faced with behaviours of concern
Creativity in engaging individuals in meaningful activities
Experience supporting individuals with autism or similar needs is desirable but not essential, as full training and induction will be provided.
A willingness to support individuals in developing independent living skills, particularly cooking, is essential for this role.

Shift pattern;

Full-time position
Flexibility required to work a range of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and sleep-ins
