Full job description

Midland Expressway Limited are looking to recruit a reliable Credit Controller into their team on a fixed term basis. The Credit Controller will take a lead role in managing and continuously improving the credit control function at MEL. This includes ownership of customer debt portfolios, proactive management of credit risk, and shaping the evolution of credit control strategy, policies and operating model.

The role will work closely with the Financial Operations team to optimise cash flow, strengthen controls, and embed best practice credit management across the organisation.

Role responsibilities

Manage the credit control portfolio, using the tolling system to identify low and negative balance customers and track payment status, account history and credit exposure.
Maintain accurate customer ledgers and account information, working closely with Customer Service to resolve billing, data and account queries.
Proactively contact customers about outstanding balances, explaining account positions clearly and recording all correspondence and follow-up actions.
Negotiate appropriate repayment plans and outcomes, applying sound judgement to balance credit risk, customer circumstances and commercial considerations.
Identify and manage difficult, sensitive or vulnerable customer situations professionally, escalating specialist requirements where needed.
Carry out credit checks, risk assessments and credit limit monitoring, taking action to prevent overexposure and recommending write-offs where appropriate.
Use tolling system data, KPIs and management information to identify trends, emerging risks and opportunities, and provide clear insight to senior stakeholders.
Lead periodic reviews of credit control policies, procedures, documentation and governance, recommending improvements to strengthen the end-to-end credit lifecycle.
Act as a subject matter expert for credit control, sharing best practice and supporting training, coverage and collaboration across the finance team.
Manage third-party debt recovery and enforcement partners, including account referrals, day-to-day relationship management, SLA and KPI performance, and support for any procurement review.

Essential Skills

GCSE Maths and English, grade C or higher
Knowledge of credit control processes
Understanding of credit risk management principles
Knowledge of debt recovery processes
Excellent interpersonal skills with a range of media
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
High attention to detail
Good negotiation skills
Good commercial judgement in credit decisions
Microsoft Excel skills, including analytical capability
Experience of credit control environment, including experience managing a credit control portfolio
Experience managing relationships with customers

Desirable skills

L3 Advanced Credit Controller/Debt Collection Specialist (or equivalent)
AAT level 2
Strong stakeholder management
Continuous improvement mindset
Experience in improving processes, policy development and/or operational design

Pay: £29,000.00-£31,000.00 per year
