Ward Catering Assistant

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Derriford Hospital PL6 8DH

Band 2 - £12.71 per hour Monday– Friday

£17.79 per hour on Saturdays and £23.08 on Sunday

2 x position 14.00 - 22.00 - working 37.5 hours per week 5 days out of 7 including weekends

6 x position 15.30 - 20.00 - working 22.5 hours per week 5 days out of 7 including weekends

University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust are seeking dedicated and experienced Ward Catering Assistants to work at Derriford Hospital. This is a combined role, covering environmental cleaning and food and beverage services, helping to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment while supporting patients’ nutritional needs.

This is an opportunity to make a real difference in the well-being of patients while working in a friendly and supportive environment. This physically demanding role requires you to be on your feet for long periods and working efficiently in a busy environment.

This is a temporary contract.

Key Responsibilities

· Deliver high standards of ward and departmental cleaning, including sanitary areas, patient equipment, and enhanced cleans where required

· Maintain infection prevention and control standards in line with Trust policies

· Serve food and beverages to patients throughout the day, including breakfast, hot meals, and drinks

· Support patient menu selection and take meal orders using electronic tablets

· Prepare, regenerate, and serve food in line with food safety and hygiene regulations

· Monitor and record food temperatures, fridge temperatures, and cleaning checklists

· Maintain ward kitchens, stock rotation, and hygiene standards

· Engage with patients, families, and visitors in a friendly, respectful, and professional manner

· Work collaboratively with ward staff, supervisors, and catering teams

- Linen duties are including such as distribution, cleaning and maintaining of hospital linen.

About you

· Physically fit – able to work on your feet for long periods

· Previous experience in a catering, cleaning, or healthcare setting is desirable

· A passion for providing excellent customer service and patient care

· Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team

· An understanding of food hygiene and health & safety regulations (training provided)

· A compassionate and friendly approach towards patients
