About the role

Love being outdoors? Want to make a real difference to local communities every day?

We're looking for a passionate and practical Highway Ranger to help keep Cambridgeshire's roads, footways and public spaces safe, well maintained and working for everyone.

This is an exciting new role that combines inspection and supervision, hands-on problem solving, community engagement and operational leadership. No two days will be the same. One day you could be investigating a flooding issue, and the next helping local volunteers improve their community, or delivering highways minor maintenance work.

If you enjoy working independently, solving problems, engaging with people and making visible improvements that residents can see and appreciate, we'd love to hear from you.

The role includes highway inspections and supervision, delivery of maintenance works, community engagement and oversight of the Council's Highway Volunteers Initiative.

What will you be doing?

As a Highway Ranger, you'll be the eyes and ears of the County Council on the highway network.

You'll inspect roads, footways, drainage systems and other highway assets, identifying issues before they become bigger problems. You'll investigate reports from residents, carry out assessments on site and help deliver practical maintenance solutions.

Working closely with parish councils, community groups and local residents, you'll help ensure that maintenance activities reflect local needs while meeting required safety and quality standards. You'll also play a key role in supporting and coordinating highway volunteers to deliver improvements in their local areas.

What you'll be doing

Inspecting highways and identifying defects requiring repair or maintenance.
Investigating issues reported by residents and stakeholders.
Planning and coordinating maintenance activities.
Delivering and overseeing local highway improvement works.
Supporting and managing the Council's Highway Volunteers Initiative.
Working closely with parish councils, community groups and local stakeholders.
Keeping residents informed about works and helping to improve customer satisfaction.
