(Maybury and Sheerwater Community Trust)

Community Development Manager, Large Group Regular Activities

Person specification

The candidate must:

· have a willingness to commit themselves to serve the people of Maybury and Sheerwater, and be in sympathy with the aims and values of Mascot (see the MASCOT website); About – Mascot Woking

· be a good team leader with experience of being involved with their local community;

· be comfortable working/volunteering with people of diverse backgrounds;

· be able to work with limited supervision – a self-starter;

· be well organised and efficient; a source of calm rather than stress

· have a preference for managing and facilitating, not just doing (within bounds of realism)

· be a good communicator; both verbally and in writing

· be computer literate with a working knowledge of e-mail, basic social media and Microsoft Word

· Experience of safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults

· Comfort with community communication processes, to ensure the widest community access

· An understanding of the communities of Maybury and Sheerwater in Woking;

· Experience supervising volunteers

· Demonstrable experience overcoming/helping others to overcome life challenges

Context

MASCOT was formed through the vision of two Woking churches over ten years ago to serve the communities of Maybury and Sheerwater in Woking. During that time its value in the community has become recognised by welfare agencies and the local people as a trusted and dependable source of assistance overcoming the challenges of everyday life. Its trustworthy Christian foundations enable it to serve without discrimination all those in need, and it is expected that employees will honour the aims and values of the organisation. Community needs are constantly changing and more recently MASCOT has been piloting a new Health Programme connecting at a community level with healthy living professionals in a dynamic way.

The opportunity has now arisen to take advantage of grant funding by the National Lottery ‘Reaching Community’ scheme to restructure and to grow greater flexibility into MASCOT. As a generalisation, previously MASCOT operated predominantly one-to-one activities from its Sheerwater Hub, with larger group activities offered at the St. Paul’s Community Halls in Maybury. Each centre has and will continue to have its own part-time Community Development Manager (CDM). Under the proposed re-structure:

· The CDM for Sheerwater will continue to manage the Hub, the activities around it and the relationships with residents and partners in Sheerwater. These activities are currently one-to-one or very small groups.

· The CDM for Maybury will focus on the Health Programme that has been successfully piloted; to develop it into a fully supported programme around Healthy Living, Health Awareness and Health Detection & Scanning. This could spread from Maybury into Sheerwater.

· The new role – CDM for Large regular group activities – will take on responsibility for the smooth running of established large group activities (such as Let’s Talk) that currently take place in Maybury but could be extended to Sheerwater.

2. Job Purpose: Community Development Manager – Large Groups

To manage large group activities in collaboration with local partners and volunteers in such a way that maximises benefits to participants, ensures smooth running, and establishes / operates appropriate management systems. Being a new role there may in due course be opportunity for the right candidate to introduce new group activities alongside established ones.

3*. Main tasks, duties and responsibilities*

Ensure that the agreed programme of activities takes place satisfactorily. Where volunteers facilitate activities give direction, but as far as possible encourage and enable the volunteers to self-manage.
Recruit and oversee, encourage and empower volunteers to meet the identified community needs that the Charity seeks to address
Actively encourage and promote attendance at MASCOT events
Assess risks, and manage activities and volunteers within the principles of safer recruitment, safeguarding, lone-working and other relevant policies
Work closely with partner organisations including but not limited to St Paul’s Church and St Michael’s Church
Provide simple reporting on activities, and support the Trustees in seeking funding from appropriate bodies; attend up to 4 Trustee meetings per year (as required)
Be a good member of the MASCOT team.

4. Accountability

This role is accountable to the Trustees of MASCOT who will appoint one of their number as a regular contact and will ensure that appropriate support and training is provided to undertake the role effectively. Initially, the direct line manager will be the Chairman of Trustees.

Hours of work: 15 hours per week to include Monday mornings, otherwise to be agreed with the line manager, based on the requirements of the job and the availability of the employee.

5. Location, start date, application process

The Community Development Manager will be offered shared office space at St. Paul’s Church, Woking. Some working around Maybury & Sheerwater will be required. By agreement with the Line Manager, some working from home will be possible.

The starting date is to be agreed, as soon as possible.

This role will largely be undertaken during the “normal working day” although some work outside those ‘normal’ working hours may be required.

6. Benefits

£11,310 per annum for 15 hours per week, with 10 days (75 hours) holiday per year + public holidays (equivalent to 5 weeks for full-time employment).

While falling below the statutory level for compulsory enrolment, Mascot will match employee contributions to their personal pension scheme up to 4%.

Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed and training provided where necessary and appropriate.

8. Length of Contract

The contract will be for an initial period of 2 years. Subject to sufficient funding, the positionmay be on-going after that. There will be an initial 3 month probation period, following which notice of 2 months can be given by either party.
