About Us

McCabe Accounting Limited is a growing accountancy practice supporting a varied portfolio of small businesses, limited companies, sole traders and property-related clients.

As the practice continues to grow, we are looking for an Accounts Assistant to join the business on a full-time basis.

This is a varied role and a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working across different areas of accountancy rather than being restricted to one particular function.

You will work closely with the practice director and gain exposure to bookkeeping, VAT, payroll, year-end accounts, personal tax and general practice administration.

As a growing practice, there will also be plenty of opportunity for the role and your responsibilities to develop over time.

The Role

Your responsibilities will include:

Accounts & Tax

Preparation of year-end accounts for sole traders and limited companies.
Preparation of personal Self Assessment tax returns.
Assisting with corporation tax compliance.
Preparation and submission of VAT returns.
Assisting clients with Making Tax Digital requirements.
Preparing and filing Confirmation Statements.
Supporting other accounts and tax compliance work across the practice.

Bookkeeping & Payroll

Completing bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients.
Reviewing bookkeeping records and identifying queries.
Bank and control account reconciliations.
Assisting with the preparation of management accounts.
Processing weekly and monthly payrolls.
Liaising directly with clients to obtain information and resolve bookkeeping queries.

Client & Practice Administration

Preparing engagement letters.
Onboarding new clients.
Assisting with AML and client identification checks.
Requesting accounting records and information from clients.
Responding to routine client queries.
Scheduling and monitoring work and deadlines.
Billing and credit control.
General administration associated with the running of an accountancy practice.

About You

We are looking for someone who is organised, reliable and keen to develop their career within a growing accountancy practice.

Ideally, you will have:

Previous experience working within an accountancy practice.
Experience with bookkeeping and VAT returns.
A good understanding of double-entry bookkeeping.
Some experience preparing year-end accounts and/or Self Assessment tax returns.
Good Microsoft Excel skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Good organisational and time-management skills.
Confidence communicating with clients by telephone and email.
The ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines.
A willingness to learn and take on additional responsibilities.

Previous experience with Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, Dext or Iris would be beneficial, although experience with all of these systems is certainly not expected.

AAT qualifications or current AAT study would be advantageous but are not essential. Relevant accountancy practice experience will be equally valued.

Training & Development

You will receive training and support across the systems and processes used within the practice.

Because this is a varied role within a growing practice, you will have the opportunity to gain experience across a much broader range of work than may be available in a larger finance department.

As your experience develops, there will be opportunities to take greater ownership of client work and client relationships.

For candidates wishing to continue their professional development, we would also be happy to discuss support towards relevant accountancy qualifications such as AAT.

Salary & Benefits

£27,000 – £30,000 per annum, depending on experience.
