Job summary

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) was established to improve the safety and standards of high-rise buildings, helping to protect residents and restore confidence in the built environment. Its mission is to lead a culture of safety and accountability across the construction and building sectors, ensuring that people live in homes that are safe, secure, and well regulated.

Working within our Operational Support team, you will be the first point of contact for a range of stakeholders where you will be able to demonstrate your professionalism and provide a consistent customer service. You will be analytical, responsible for providing responses to email queries, including financial and operational support, requiring a good standard of written communication.

You will use your organisational skills to keep you focused as you support the team with an array of projects, including administrative tasks relating to various functions of the businesss operation. You will join a supportive environment that encourages personal development and career progression, helping you gain an overarching understanding of the various BSR functions as set out in the Building Safety Act 2022.

Working Pattern

Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 22.2 hours per week.

Job description

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) became an Arm's Length Body (ALB) of Ministry for Housing, Communities, and Local Government (MHCLG) on 1st June 2026.

The BSR is a Non-crown, Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), and as such its employees are Public Servants, rather than Civil Servants.

All employees will have access to:

The entitlement to compensation being calculated in line with the Civil Service Compensation Scheme.

Existing Civil Servants transferring into BSR will have their continuity of Service recognised for the purposes of sick pay and annual leave entitlement. However, if they later move to another Civil Service department, continuity of service may not automatically be recognised by the receiving department. This would be subject to that departments own policies and arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

You will contribute to the delivery of BSRs Strategy by undertaking a range of business support tasks and processes, in direct support of both front line and other BSR staff, including providing support to other parts of BSR, on both a local and national basis.

Provide sound administrative support to your wider team to meet business objectives, this can vary from responding to email queries in a timely manner, managing inboxes, maintaining an office presence to support with post duties and itineraries or contributing to projects across your division in a meaningful way
Work with division-relevant systems and programmes ranging from Microsoft Word and Excel through to HR systems
Provide consistently good customer service, ensuring any queries are dealt with in line with SLA's
Assist your colleagues on any projects and work activities
Overseeing compliance in regards to any data entry/management such as updating records
Liaising with internal and external stakeholders

Essential Skills and Criteria

A team player who is able to communicate and build effective relationships with your colleagues and provide a consistent administrative service across your team and the business
Well-organised, able to prioritise your workload and meet deadlines
Able to deliver a consistent customer service with external stakeholders
Excellent attention to detail with the ability to accurately record information across multiple platforms
Basic understanding of, or willingness to learn new skills such as invoicing
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages such as MS Word, Excel and Outlook

At BSR, we are proud to be able to offer our people the opportunity to work in a hybrid way which combines working from home and the office. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement, and your allocated office will be your contractual place of work.

There will be a requirement to travel to the office for various activities, e.g., collaborative working, supporting and training colleagues. If hybrid working is suitable for you and your role, you will be expected to attend the office, or other business-related site, for 60% of your working week. The arrangements will be determined primarily by business need, but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account.

Therefore, we would encourage candidates to consider if the commute from home to the office is a feasible distance to travel before making an application. Please note that if you are successful, hybrid working will be discussed prior to taking up the post.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles , and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.

Application Information

Upon submitting your short application form, you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Verbal Reasoning Test.

Please complete the online tests as soon as possible, within 24-48 hours is recommended, to allow time to complete your full application.

If you successfully pass the test, you will then be invited to complete the final stage of your application.

You must complete the online tests and your full application form by 12pm midday on 1st September 2026. If you fail to complete the online test and full application form before the deadline, your application will be withdrawn.

There will be maintenance for online tests on Sunday 30th August 2026. This means you will be unable to access the online tests between 4pm and midnight. Your progress will be saved, and you will be able to continue once the tests are available again.

As part of your application, you will be invited to complete an anonymised CV which should include your career history, experience, and qualifications. Please note the CV will be for information purposes only and will not be scored.

You will also be asked to complete an anonymised Personal Statement, of no more than 750 words which demonstrates how you meet the Essential Skills and Criteria of the job advert.

Sift Information

The sift will take place from 1st September when you will be assessed on the Lead Behaviour and your Personal Statement.

IMPORTANT: Please note an initial sift will be conducted on your Behaviour. If you meet the benchmark for the Behaviour element, you will be progressed to a full sift in which the Personal Statement will also be scored. If you do not meet the standard for the Behaviour, you will not receive a score for your Personal Statement.

Interview Information

Interviews will take place from 28th September when you will be assessed against the behaviours detailed within the job advert.
