Mentor Manager Job Description

Overview

Chapter2 is a growing charity that is uniquely focused on helping one of the most at-risk groups within our communities: fatherless boys. Millions of boys in the UK are growing up without any meaningful contact with their father and the consequences can be profound. Chapter2 is combatting this worsening trend across Reading by offering dedicated long-term male mentors for fatherless boys.

This role is an exciting opportunity to join the charity during an exciting period of growth. This role is ideally suited to a self-starter who is comfortable working within an open and fast-moving environment and as an integral member of a small team. Experience of managing volunteers and supporting young people is essential.

This is a full-time position of 37.5 hours per week, which includes occasional out-of-office and evening work.

Under the Equality Act 2010, this post has an occupational requirement to be a Christian.

Job Description

Job purpose: Provide support and supervision to volunteer mentors and young people within our church partnership programmes and to support the continued growth of the charity by helping to meet the significant need for mentors for fatherless boys in the Reading area. This includes contributing to all elements of the mentoring programme and doing so in line with the charity’s Christian ethos.

Location: Reading Area. Predominantly home-based. Requires regular face-to-face meetings in the Reading Area. Travel (including mileage) will only be reimbursed up to a 15-mile radius of Reading.

Position reports to: Senior Mentor Manager

Position is responsible for: Volunteer Male Mentors and Guardians/Mothers

Length of contract: Initially, this is a one-year contract with a 6-month probationary period.

Salary: £30,900 - £35,020

The role will require the successful candidate to have a DBS Enhanced Disclosure.

Main Duties and Areas of Responsibility

Mentor support and supervision: Monitor the quality and progress of mentoring relationships within our church partnership (Reading Family Church) through regular monitoring and supervision. Hold regular (monthly) meetings with mentors to review progress either virtually or in person (at minimum).Cultivate an environment in which mentors can thrive, feel supported, and remain engaged and committed for the long-term.
Mentor engagement and communication: Create and manage regular communications to engage and encourage mentors (using videos, statistics, and testimonies) and contribute to wider external communications where appropriate. Attend and present at training or recruitment events and attend mentor events/socials.
Recruitment: Actively recruit and encourage men within our church partnership (Reading Family Church) to attend our mandatory training day and apply to be a mentor. Lead on the assessment, induction and matching process for new mentors.
Safeguarding: Remain proactive and alert with regard to safeguarding matters and role-model a robust safeguarding culture. Be responsible for ensuring policies and procedures are adhered to, including safer recruitment checks (e.g. DBS/overseas checks, references, and update service checks).
Client management (mothers/guardians and mentees): Manage regular communication and reviews of mentoring with assigned groups such as mother/guardians and mentees. Arrange and attend pre-matching and matching meetings for mentors and mentees.
Charity growth: Attend professional meetings and relevant events as appropriate, for example for networking opportunities for the charity, for skills updates.
Working with external partners: Attend multi-agency meetings for example, to support mentoring pairs under social care, CAMHS, Youth Justice Service.
Faith alignment: Occupational requirement under the Equality Act 2010 due to faith-inspired projects.
Wider charity support: contribute to wider charity activity through attendance at non-mandatory training, group activities and other events.

Skills and Experience

Essential

A clear passion for supporting vulnerable young people, particularly boys.
Demonstrated skill in managerial/supervisory experience.
Proven experience in managing and supporting volunteer groups.
High emotional intelligence and a positive, inspirational outlook.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with adults and young people (both verbal and written).
Experience with Safer Recruitment and Safeguarding practices, and the ability to maintain a robust safeguarding culture.
Highly organised with strong office management and IT skills
Self-starter who is delivery-focused, able to use their own initiative, and comfortable managing multiple work-fronts and prioritising a varied workload.
An ability to be supportive and sympathetic towards the charity’s Christian ethos (Occupational Requirement under the Equality Act 2010 due to faith-inspired projects).

Desirable

Experience with managing databases such as Charity Suite.
Experience in the charity/non-profit sector.
An understanding of early life trauma, neurodiversity and additional needs and its impact on young people.
Full UK driving license
Access to a car

Pay: £30,900.00-£35,020.00 per year
