Waking Night Residential Support Worker

Location: Magnolia House, Slough

Job Overview

Sisma Care Ltd is looking for reliable, compassionate and vigilant Waking Night Residential Childcare Workers to join the team at Magnolia House, our children’s residential home in Slough.

Magnolia House provides a safe, nurturing and supportive home environment for children and young people aged 8–17 who may have experienced trauma and may present with social, emotional, behavioural or additional support needs.

As a Waking Night Residential Childcare Worker, you will be responsible for maintaining the safety, welfare and emotional wellbeing of the children throughout the night. You must remain awake, alert and observant for the entire shift and respond appropriately to any concerns, incidents or emergencies.

You will help ensure that the home remains calm, secure and well organised overnight and that clear, accurate information is handed over to the day staff.

As Sisma Care continues to grow, there will be opportunities to progress into roles such as Senior Waking Night Worker, Key Worker or Team Leader. We support staff development through training and fully funded professional qualifications, including the Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare.

Main Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

Maintaining the safety, welfare and security of the children and the home throughout the night
Remaining awake, alert and available for the full duration of the shift
Completing regular welfare checks, room observations and environmental safety checks in accordance with individual care plans, risk assessments and home procedures
Providing reassurance and emotional support to children who wake feeling distressed, anxious, unsettled or unwell
Responding appropriately to night-time incidents, emergencies, missing-from-care concerns or safeguarding matters
Supporting children with bedtime and night-time routines where required
Using trauma-informed, PACE and restorative approaches when responding to children’s behaviour and emotional needs
Maintaining a calm, structured and nurturing environment overnight
Completing accurate records, including night logs, welfare checks, incident reports and handover notes
Providing a clear and detailed verbal handover to the incoming staff team
Completing agreed domestic duties and ensuring the home is clean, safe and prepared for the following day
Reporting maintenance, health and safety or safeguarding concerns promptly
Working collaboratively with colleagues, managers and external professionals
Following Sisma Care’s safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and professional conduct policies at all times

Experience and Skills

Previous experience working with children or young people is highly desirable.

Applicants should also demonstrate:

An understanding of safeguarding children and promoting their welfare
An awareness of trauma-informed care and the impact of trauma on children’s behaviour
The ability to remain calm and professional during challenging situations
Patience, empathy and emotional resilience
The ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries
Good verbal and written communication skills
Strong written English and basic IT skills for completing electronic records and reports
The ability to follow care plans, risk assessments and safeguarding procedures
Reliability, punctuality and the ability to work independently during quieter periods
The ability to remain awake, alert and observant throughout the night shift
A willingness to undertake training and work towards relevant childcare qualifications

A full UK driving licence is desirable but not essential.

Additional Requirements

Successful applicants must:

Hold an Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service or be willing to complete an Enhanced DBS application and subscribe to the Update Service before starting employment
Complete all required safer recruitment checks
Provide a full employment history and explain any gaps in employment
Provide satisfactory references, including at least one reference from a recent employer
Be willing to complete mandatory training and induction before commencing shifts
Have the right to work in the UK without restrictions
Understand that this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship
Be available to work nights, weekends and bank holidays as required by the rota

Employment will be subject to satisfactory DBS checks, references, identity checks, right-to-work checks and completion of Sisma Care’s safer recruitment process.
