Full job description

Freelance Victualler

Location: Southampton / Remote
Contract: Freelance / Self-employed
Hours: Approximately 1–8 hours per week, depending on the season
Rate: £13–£15 per hour
Season: May–October, with reduced hours during January–February

About the Role

We are looking for a reliable, organised and proactive Freelance Victualler to take responsibility for the food and provisioning requirements of our sailing programme.

The role involves planning and ordering food for sailing courses and trips, taking account of customer dietary requirements, agreed budgets and the specific requirements of each sailing. Provisions will either be ordered for delivery directly to the skipper/yacht or prepared and organised in our storeroom for collection.

This is a flexible freelance role which would suit someone who is highly organised, enjoys working independently and is confident managing budgets and multiple requirements at the same time.

The workload will vary throughout the year. During the main sailing season, from May to October, the role is likely to require up to 8 hours per week, reducing to approximately 1–2 hours per week during January and February.

Key ResponsibilitiesFood Planning & Provisioning

Take responsibility for the food provisioning requirements for sailing courses and trips.
Review upcoming sailing schedules and establish food and drink requirements for each booking.
Plan menus and food orders appropriate to the duration and nature of each sailing.
Take full account of customer dietary requirements, allergies and food preferences.
Ensure suitable alternatives are provided where dietary requirements apply.
Order food and other provisions within agreed budgets.
Compare products and suppliers to ensure good value for money.
Place online supermarket and other food orders as required.
Arrange delivery of provisions directly to the relevant skipper or yacht where appropriate.
Alternatively, organise and prepare provisions in the company storeroom ready for skipper collection.
Clearly label and organise provisions so that they can be easily identified for the relevant sailing.

Stock & Budget Management

Work within agreed budgets for individual courses, trips or bookings.
Keep accurate records of provisioning expenditure.
Monitor existing stock and use it where appropriate to minimise waste and unnecessary expenditure.
Maintain appropriate levels of commonly used provisions.
Check food stock regularly and ensure that items are within their use-by/best-before dates.
Identify opportunities to improve value, reduce waste and make the provisioning process more efficient.
Flag any potential budget issues or additional requirements in advance.

Communication & Coordination

Liaise with the sailing and operations team to understand upcoming requirements.
Ensure that provisioning is completed in good time for each sailing.
Communicate clearly with skippers regarding delivery or collection arrangements.
Respond promptly to changes in bookings, numbers or dietary requirements.
Highlight any issues that could affect the provision of food for a sailing.

The Person

We are looking for someone who is:

Highly organised and able to manage multiple orders and requirements.
Reliable and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Comfortable working to fixed budgets.
Confident using online shopping and ordering systems.
Thorough and attentive to detail, particularly when dealing with dietary requirements.
Practical, proactive and willing to take ownership of their responsibilities.
Good at planning ahead and anticipating what will be required.
Comfortable communicating with skippers, instructors and the wider operations team.
Able to respond flexibly when sailing plans or requirements change.
Ideally experienced in food purchasing, catering, hospitality, sailing or holiday provisioning, although this is not essential.

Hours & Flexibility

This is a flexible freelance position, with the workload varying according to the sailing programme.

As an indication:

May–October: up to approximately 8 hours per week
January–February: approximately 1–2 hours per week
Other months: hours will vary according to the sailing programme

The work can generally be arranged flexibly, although provisioning will need to be completed within agreed timescales ahead of each sailing.

Rate

£13–£15 per hour, depending on experience and suitability.

As this is a freelance/self-employed position, the successful candidate will be responsible for their own tax and National Insurance arrangements.
