Full job description

12-Month Maternity Cover | Full Time | Cowes, Isle of Wight

Starting salary: £24,500–£30,000 depending on experience

35 hours per week | Monday–Friday

Jaspers Coffee is an independent specialty coffee roastery based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. We're a close-knit team, we're growing, and we're looking for someone friendly, diligent and capable to join us for a 12-month maternity cover.

This is a varied role that sits across coffee roasting, roastery management and customer account management. Around half your time will be spent on the roastery floor and half working with our wholesale customers and helping keep the wider operation running smoothly.

We're looking for someone who cares about doing things properly, enjoys working with people and isn't afraid to get stuck in. You might already be an experienced coffee professional, or you might be someone with great customer service and organisational skills who is excited to learn the coffee side of the business.

What you'll be doing

Roasting & production

Roast coffee on our Giesen W6 and W15 roasters, following established roast profiles.
Carry out quality control and help maintain the consistency of our coffees.
Manage green coffee handling and stock.
Help plan production to make sure we're roasting the right coffees at the right time.
Assist with packing and fulfilment when needed.
Carry out basic equipment maintenance, with training provided.
Help maintain a clean, organised and safe production environment.

Wholesale & account management

Build and maintain great relationships with our existing wholesale customers.
Receive and manage wholesale orders.
Coordinate dispatch and logistics with Royal Mail and our local delivery partner, Keert.
Be a friendly and reliable point of contact for our customers.
Understand our customers' needs and look for ways we can support them.
Help identify opportunities to develop existing accounts and grow the business.

Roastery management & team support

Help manage the day-to-day running of the roastery.
Work alongside and provide direction to at least one roastery assistant.
Maintain established purchasing and supplier relationships.
Follow our health & safety procedures and ensure incidents are reported appropriately.
Help create a positive, organised and enjoyable working environment for the team.

Social media & community

Engage with customers through social media, including posts, messages, chats and comments.
Represent Jaspers Coffee at selected events and industry opportunities.

What we're looking for

We're not expecting one person to walk through the door knowing everything.

We're looking for someone who is:

Methodical and quality-focused — you notice the details and care about getting things right.
Calm under pressure — particularly when production, orders and customers all need your attention at once.
Commercially minded — you're interested in helping a business grow.
Curious — you want to understand how things work and are happy to ask questions.
A good communicator — you're comfortable talking to customers, suppliers and colleagues.
Friendly and approachable — building genuine relationships is a big part of this job.
A willing learner — whether you're learning to roast coffee, a new piece of software or how one of our customers operates.
Team-focused — we're a small team, so everyone needs to be willing to help out.

Customer service experience is essential. Experience managing a team would be a bonus.

A background in specialty coffee is definitely welcome, but it isn't essential. If you're enthusiastic about coffee and have the right attitude and transferable skills, we'll provide the training you need to develop your roasting and sensory skills.

Coffee experience is a bonus, not a barrier

Training will be provided in:

Coffee roasting and our established roast profiles
Professional barista skills
Basic sensory and coffee evaluation skills
Manual handling
Food hygiene

Experience with QuickBooks, Shopify and Excel would be useful.

The practical stuff

This is a 35-hour-per-week, Monday–Friday role, based primarily at our roastery in Cowes.

There is some flexibility to work remotely when appropriate, particularly for account management and administrative work, but this is fundamentally a hands-on roastery role and you'll need to be comfortable spending a significant amount of your week on-site.

There may occasionally be opportunities to work at events or industry activities at weekends. These will be agreed in advance. Where overtime is required, you'll accrue TOIL (time off in lieu).

The roastery is a production environment, so the role involves manual handling of coffee sacks and packed boxes. You'll receive manual handling training, and you will never be expected to move heavy items independently.

You'll also be working around roasting equipment, so there can be periods of heat, noise and minor coffee dust. Seasonal temperature changes are part of working in our production space, and appropriate clothing for the conditions is essential.

The contract

This position is initially offered as a 12-month fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave.

We're growing as a business, and we'd love this role to potentially become something longer-term. At the end of the 12-month contract, we'll review the position and the needs of the business. A permanent position may be available for the right person, but we can't make any promises at this stage.

What does success look like?

After your first couple months, we'd want you to feel confident roasting our coffees independently and managing the day-to-day requirements of the roastery.

By the end of the contract, we'd hope our longstanding wholesale customers know and trust you, you've helped identify opportunities to grow the business, you've shown initiative, and you've become an important and positive part of the Jaspers team.
