Structures Examiner – Roped Access

Salary: £26,437 - £45,000 dependent on experience

Hours: 40 per week over 5 days (occasional weekend or weeknights required)

Location: Sheffield/Remote

Our Company

Stroma Specialist Access provides a professional inspection, maintenance and examination service for major UK infrastructure projects on the rail and highways networks and for buildings. With nationwide coverage and over 30 years’ experience, we offer clients bespoke project support using specialist difficult access methods.

What you will be doing

Reporting to the Rope Access Manager, Roped Access Structures Examiners are responsible for carrying out structural inspections (often via specialist access techniques); maintaining the high quality of the inspections we execute along with associated reports and contributing to the safe operation of the inspection teams.

The majority of the role is forming part of a team that carries out inspection work either on infrastructure projects (Rail & Road) or Buildings. We work nationwide so generally working away Monday to Friday, although with local projects you will be able to commute from home.

Occasionally we have projects that require you to work alone (although this is less likely for trainee inspectors).

The work can be physical in nature (ascending ropes, de-vegetation works, walking along railway tracks), generally outside and is frequently carried out at height. Similarly, we carry out works in confined spaces such as tunnel shafts, culverts, voided bridge decks and often find ourselves working in or over water.

As part of the role (in line with Network Rail Policies) a pre sponsorship Network Rail Medical and Drug & Alcohol test will be carried out. Passing the medical and D&A is a prerequisite to employment.

Further to this we carry out random drug and alcohol testing on 10% of our workforce (including office staff).

Weekend night shifts are a factor of rail work and as part of the role you are expected to work occasional weekend shifts as per business needs.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities:

Use specialist access to inspect and examine a variety of structures throughout the UK in accordance with the required technical standards/specifications.
Lead the safe and successful delivery of Structural Inspections, Investigations and Surveys.
Prepare inspection reports, including the production of drawings within CAD.
To ensure all work assigned by the team leader is carried out safely and to timescale.
To ensure that you work and comply within the personal responsibilities detailed in the current Health and Safety legislation and to assist in the Company quality objectives of no accidents.
To ensure that all equipment, including personal protective equipment issued is fit for purpose and safety checked before each job assignment.
Assist in other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the role.

Skills and Capabilities

Valid IRATA certification
STE 04 (desired)
PTS and CSCS card (desired)
Confined Space Entry (desired)
SSSTS (desired)
Previous experience in rail, highway inspections – bridges, culverts, retaining walls, ancillary structures
Experience in building inspections
Education to Level 3 (A Level or equivalent)
Flexibility to travel and work nights/weekends where required
Full UK driving license
