Full job description

Activities Co-ordinator needed at Cedar Lodge Nursing Home, Birmingham.

Hours: 15–20 per week
Rate: £13.50 per hour
Experience: 12 months of previous experience essential, preferably within a care home environment

About Role:

The Activities Co-ordinator is responsible for planning, organising and delivering a varied programme of meaningful activities for residents within the nursing home. The role aims to promote residents’ physical, emotional, social and cognitive wellbeing while supporting independence, dignity, choice and quality of life.

The Activities Co-ordinator will ensure that activities are person-centred, taking into consideration each resident’s individual interests, abilities, cultural background, life history, preferences and needs.

Activities Co-ordinator – Key Responsibilities

· Plan and organise a varied programme of activities for residents.

· Promote residents’ physical, emotional, social and cognitive wellbeing.

· Encourage independence, participation and social interaction.

· Provide meaningful activities based on residents’ interests and abilities.

· Organise group and one-to-one activities, including music, games, arts and crafts, exercise and reminiscence.

· Support residents living with dementia and adapt activities to individual needs.

· Encourage family and community involvement.

· Maintain a safe, welcoming and stimulating environment.

· Work closely with care staff and management to provide person-centred care.

· Maintain accurate records of activities and resident participation.

· Respect residents’ dignity, privacy, choices, culture and individual preferences.

· Create a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for all residents.

Person-Centred Approach

· Get to know residents and understand their interests, hobbies, previous occupations, family life and personal history.

· Encourage residents to make choices about the activities they would like to participate in.

· Respect residents who choose not to participate in activities.

· Encourage residents to maintain existing hobbies and interests wherever possible.

· Promote independence by enabling residents to participate at their own level.

· Ensure activities are inclusive and accessible to all residents.

Promoting Wellbeing

The Activities Co-ordinator will aim to promote:

· Physical wellbeing through appropriate exercise and movement.

· Mental wellbeing through stimulating and enjoyable activities.

· Emotional wellbeing by providing companionship and opportunities for self-expression.

· Social wellbeing by encouraging friendships and interaction between residents.

· Cognitive wellbeing through memory, language, problem-solving and reminiscence activities.

· Sense of purpose by providing residents with meaningful opportunities to contribute and participate.

Dementia and Cognitive Support

· Provide appropriate activities for residents living with dementia.

· Use reminiscence and familiar activities to support residents’ memories and identity.

· Adapt activities according to individual cognitive abilities.

· Use clear, simple instructions and appropriate communication techniques.

· Monitor residents’ responses to activities and adjust approaches where necessary.

Health, Safety and Risk Management

· Ensure all activities are carried out safely and appropriately.

· Complete or contribute to risk assessments for activities and outings.

· Follow the nursing home’s health and safety procedures.

· Ensure equipment and activity areas are safe and suitable for residents.

· Report accidents, incidents, hazards or concerns to the appropriate manager.

· Ensure residents are appropriately supervised during activities.

Record Keeping

· Maintain accurate records of activities provided.

· Record residents’ participation and engagement where required.

· Document residents’ preferences, interests and feedback.

· Report any changes in residents’ mood, behaviour, participation or wellbeing to the appropriate care staff.

· Contribute relevant information to residents’ care plans and reviews.

· Maintain records of external entertainers, outings and special events where required.

Teamwork and Communication

· Work closely with nurses, carers, management and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

· Communicate effectively with residents, relatives and visitors.

· Share relevant information about residents’ interests, needs and wellbeing with the care team.

· Attend staff meetings and care reviews where appropriate.

· Work collaboratively with other staff to ensure activities complement residents’ care and support plans.

Maintaining Dignity and Confidentiality

· Treat every resident with dignity, respect and compassion.

· Maintain residents’ privacy and confidentiality at all times.

· Respect residents’ individual choices, beliefs, culture, religion and lifestyle.

· Follow the nursing home’s policies regarding confidentiality and data protection.

· Promote equality, diversity and inclusion throughout all activities.
