The Humber Refinery is playing its part of the UK’s decarbonisation efforts.

As a part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, the Humber Refinery is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. With proposed plans for a number of projects including to implement a first-of-a-kind FCC carbon capture project, the Humber Refinery is part of Humber Zero, a world-scale concept to reduce UK industry carbon emissions, saving up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 from the Immingham industrial area.

On top of this, the Humber Refinery is the UK’s only refiner producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel at scale. It is also the only European facility producing battery anode coke, which forms a critical component for lithium-ion batteries used in electrical vehicles and in consumer electronics. Our current production of battery anode coke is equivalent to placing 1.3 million EVs on the road every year, and we are developing multiple projects to expand this capability.

As a Specialist, Environmental , you will serve as a trusted resource for interpreting requirements, navigating regulatory expectations, and helping the business operate responsibly in a dynamic operating environment. You’ll work closely with cross‑functional teams and external stakeholders, applying technical expertise, sound judgment, and a practical mindset to real‑world challenges across environmental disciplines. This position is well‑suited for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, values collaboration, and wants to make a tangible impact on environmental performance at an operating refinery.

What You’ll Do

Coordinate and deliver environmental compliance and regulatory support for refinery operations, ensuring process units, utility systems, and projects comply with applicable permits, regulations, and company standards across one or more environmental media.

Maintain strong working knowledge of environmental legislation, permits, and compliance requirements affecting refineries, and interpret permit conditions to provide clear, practical guidance to operations, maintenance, engineering, and project teams.

Lead or support permitting activities, including obtaining, renewing, and amending applicable permits, and evaluate environmental impacts associated with unit modifications, turnarounds, and capital projects.

Monitor compliance through tracking, calculations, recordkeeping, and reporting, identifying trends, potential risks, and opportunities to improve compliance reliability.

Partner with operations, environmental teams, and regulators to support inspections, audits, and regulatory interactions, helping resolve findings and implement corrective actions.

Prepare and maintain permits, compliance reports, deviation documentation, and supporting records to ensure information is accurate, complete, and inspection‑ready.

Support management of change activities by evaluating environmental impacts of operational changes and ensuring permitting and compliance requirements are addressed before implementation.

Communicate regulatory updates and permit requirements to refinery teams, and help develop or coordinate environmental compliance training for affected personnel.

Apply sound judgment to manage competing priorities and deliver compliant, cost‑effective environmental solutions that support safe, reliable refinery operations.

What You’ll Bring – Required

Legally authorized to work in the UK on a regular, full-time basis without restrictions on local terms and conditions.

Full, current, valid UK drivers’ licence.

A degree in an environmental, engineering, scientific, or related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Environmental compliance experience

Intermediate proficiency working with environmental legislation, permits, and compliance requirements.

Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:

Occasionally work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays, and perform on-call duties.

Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet

Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, around chemicals and hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat, and in harsh weather conditions.

Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment.

What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred

Environmental compliance experience in a refining, manufacturing, chemical, or other industrial setting

Experience with Environmental Management Systems (“EMS”)

Trained in Emergency Response Incident Command System (“ICS”) and procedures
