Job description

Wescom is recognised as a global leader in the manufacture of specialist pyrotechnics for signalling, illumination, screening and for battlefield training and simulation, obstacle clearance systems and civil defence and security.

This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of health, safety, and environmental compliance at our lower-tier COMAH facility. The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of the site’s health and safety strategy, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and regulatory requirements while promoting a proactive, prevention-focused safety culture. The role will act as the primary contact for the HSE Explosives Inspector and play a pivotal role in supporting safe and responsible operations across the business.

Key Responsibilities

Health and Safety Strategy: Develop and implement a health and safety strategy that aligns with the company’s goals and objectives, ensuring a proactive and prevention-based approach.

Regulatory Compliance: Act as the point of contact for the HSE Explosives Inspector, facilitating site inspections and reviews. Stay up to date with relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and standards, and ensure the facility’s compliance with all relevant laws.

Risk Assessment: Conduct and review risk assessments, including hazard identification and process safety assessments, to mitigate potential health and safety risks.

Emergency Response Planning: Develop, maintain, and regularly test emergency response plans to effectively manage and respond to potential accidents and incidents.

Training and Education: Create and deliver health and safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring a culture of safety awareness and competence.

Incident Investigation: Lead investigations of workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses, and implement corrective and preventive actions to avoid future recurrences.

Health and Safety Reporting: Prepare regular health and safety reports for senior management and regulatory authorities, providing insights and recommendations.

Audits and Inspections: Conduct regular audits and inspections to assess compliance, identify areas for improvement, and track progress.

Safety Culture: Foster a strong safety culture by promoting employee engagement, feedback, and participation in safety initiatives.

Environmental Compliance: Maintain the ISO 14001 management system, working with site teams to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability goals.

Competencies

Experience

5+ years of experience in and health and safety management within a chemical, defence or industrial manufacturing environment.

Proven track record or successfully implementing health and safety programs and initiatives.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Science, or a related field would be advantageous.

Professional certificate such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent is highly desirable.
