Healthcare Assistant (HCA)

Private GP Clinic in the heart of Wimbledon Village

Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, professional and experienced Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly private GP clinic. The successful candidate will support our GPs and clinical team in delivering high-quality patient care within a modern, patient-centred environment.

This role requires an individual who is confident working independently, has excellent phlebotomy skills (adults and children), and enjoys working as part of a small team. The role is varied, combining direct clinical care, administrative support, stock management, infection control, and occasional reception cover.

Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties

Perform venepuncture (phlebotomy) on adults, children and young people safely and competently.
Undertake routine clinical observations including:
Blood pressure
Pulse
Temperature
Respiratory rate
Oxygen saturation
Height and weight
BMI calculations
Carry out urine dipstick testing and prepare specimens for laboratory collection.
Assist with wound care and simple dressings under GP direction.
Remove sutures and clips where appropriately trained.
Perform ear irrigation/microsuction support if trained.
Support GPs during minor procedures and treatments.
Act as a chaperone during examinations and intimate procedures
Provide health promotion advice where appropriate.
Maintain accurate clinical records within the electronic patient record system.

Infection Prevention & Clinical Governance

Clean and prepare clinical rooms before and after consultations.
Ensure consulting rooms remain fully stocked and ready for use.
Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
Undertake daily, weekly and monthly equipment checks.
Ensure clinical equipment is maintained and calibrated.
Dispose of clinical waste safely.
Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement projects.
Report incidents, accidents and near misses in accordance with clinic policies.

Stock Management

Monitor stock levels across clinical areas.
Complete routine stock takes.
Order clinical supplies and consumables.
Rotate stock ensuring expiry dates are monitored.
Liaise with suppliers regarding deliveries and shortages.

Administrative Duties

Maintain accurate patient documentation.
Scan and file documents where required.
Assist with administrative tasks supporting the clinical team.

Reception Support (Occasional)

Welcome patients professionally.
Answer telephone enquiries.
Book and amend appointments.
Process patient registrations.
Take payments where applicable.
Respond to general patient enquiries.
Support reception during staff absence or busy periods.

General Responsibilities

Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Work in accordance with CQC standards and clinic policies.
Participate in mandatory training.
Attend team meetings.
Support colleagues across the practice.
Maintain professional registration where applicable.
Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role.

Person SpecificationEssential

Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant within General Practice, Primary Care, Private Healthcare or Outpatient Services.
Competent in adult and paediatric phlebotomy.
Experience undertaking routine clinical observations.
Experience supporting minor procedures.
Confident acting as a clinical chaperone.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
High level of professionalism and patient care.
Good IT skills and experience using electronic patient record systems.
Ability to prioritise workload and work independently.
Strong organisational skills.
Flexible and reliable.
Understanding of infection prevention and control.
Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
Right to work in the UK.

Desirable

Care Certificate.
NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent).
Experience within private healthcare.
Suture removal competency.
Ear irrigation or microsuction training.
Experience with stock management and ordering.
Experience undertaking clinical audits.
Basic Life Support certification.
Experience supporting CQC compliance.
