You will deliver high-impact, personalised Maths and English intervention to children and young people who may experience barriers to education, including disengagement from mainstream learning, working below age-related expectations, SEND and SEMH needs, anxiety, low confidence or inconsistent engagement with education.
The role combines high-quality teaching with a strong relational approach, focusing on rebuilding engagement, reducing learning anxiety and supporting measurable academic progress over time. The successful candidate will understand that many young people require more than traditional tutoring and will use a patient, empathetic and adaptable approach to help learners develop confidence, resilience and a positive relationship with education.
Main Delivery Areas
The successful candidate will deliver a range of specialist tuition and intervention services, supporting learners through a variety of flexible delivery models. This may include:
- 1:1 Specialist Tuition – Providing personalised Maths and English support based on individual learning needs, abilities and targets.
- GCSE Revision Support – Supporting pupils to prepare for examinations through structured revision programmes, exam techniques and targeted intervention.
- Functional Skills Support – Delivering practical English and Maths support to help learners develop essential skills for further education, employment and everyday life.
- SEND Tuition – Adapting teaching approaches to support learners with additional needs, including SEND, SEMH needs, anxiety and barriers to engagement.
- Online Tuition – Delivering engaging and accessible virtual learning sessions using appropriate digital resources and communication strategies.
- Home-Based Learning – Providing supportive tuition within the learner’s home environment for pupils who may struggle accessing traditional education settings.
- School-Aged Parent Education Support – Supporting young parents to continue their education and develop key Maths and English skills alongside their personal circumstances.
- Small Group Tuition – Delivering targeted intervention sessions to small groups of learners with similar academic or learning needs.
Delivery may take place across a variety of settings, including online, within the learner’s home, in schools, community locations or other suitable learning environments.
The tutor will deliver tailored Maths and English intervention sessions based on individual pupil needs, abilities and learning goals. They will design creative and engaging learning activities that respond to pupil interests, confidence levels and preferred learning styles, while supporting learners working towards core skills, GCSE preparation and functional learning outcomes where appropriate. The tutor will adapt teaching approaches throughout sessions to maintain engagement and use practical, real-world and creative methods to make learning accessible and meaningful.
A key aspect of the role is developing consistent, trusting relationships with pupils who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged learners. The tutor will use positive engagement strategies, patience and understanding to reduce barriers to learning and support young people in managing frustration, anxiety and low confidence. They will use appropriate de-escalation techniques and remain calm and consistent when faced with challenges, breaking learning down into achievable steps and celebrating progress to help pupils experience success.
The tutor will complete informal, low-pressure assessments to identify learning gaps, strengths and areas for development. They will monitor and record pupil progress through accurate session notes, including engagement levels, learning completed, concepts covered, progress made and any barriers affecting learning. The tutor will provide clear, strengths-based feedback that focuses on effort, progress and development, while supporting evidence gathering for school reviews, intervention outcomes and EHCP processes where required.
The role requires effective communication and partnership working with parents, schools, commissioning professionals and the wider Adventure in Learning Specialist Tuition Services team. The tutor will provide professional updates regarding pupil progress, contribute to review discussions where required and ensure tuition delivery aligns with school targets, curriculum expectations and individual learner outcomes.
The successful candidate will work in line with Adventure in Learning Specialist Tuition Services safeguarding policies and procedures at all times. They will identify and report any safeguarding, welfare or wellbeing concerns through the appropriate channels, maintain professional boundaries across a range of settings including 1:1 tuition, small group sessions, online tuition, home learning and school-based delivery, and ensure all records are maintained accurately and confidentially.
The ideal candidate will be patient, approachable and empathetic, with the ability to build positive relationships with young people who may have experienced barriers or negative experiences within education. They will be confident working with reluctant learners, resilient and able to remain calm under pressure, creative and adaptable in their teaching approach, reliable and consistent in their delivery, and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers and achieve their potential.
Experience of practical teaching approaches, alternative methods of engaging learners and supporting pupils with SEND, SEMH needs or within alternative education settings would be desirable. The ability to inspire confidence in pupils who may have lost trust in education and help learners recognise their own potential would also be highly valued.
