Role Purpose
The Day Service Outreach & Group Facilitator is a front-line, community-facing role supporting people affected by substance misuse, homelessness, rough sleeping, social isolation and other complex circumstances. The post holder will combine skilled group facilitation with proactive outreach, harm-reduction support, practical engagement and effective partnership working.
The role requires a compassionate, trauma-aware and non-judgemental approach. The post holder will meet people where they are, build trusting professional relationships, encourage engagement with appropriate services and help people move towards recovery, stability and greater connection with their communities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Group Facilitation
Lead, co-facilitate and contribute to the ongoing development of BUBIC’s group programme, including:
- Live and Direct Group.
- Clare Group.
- Movement Within Groups.
- Other BUBIC groups, workshops and activities as required.
- Plan and prepare purposeful, structured and inclusive group sessions.
- Facilitate meaningful discussion while ensuring that quieter or less confident participants are supported to contribute.
- Create a psychologically and physically safe, respectful and inclusive group environment.
- Recognise when a participant may require additional one-to-one support or referral.
- Manage sensitive, challenging or emotionally charged discussions appropriately.
- Work collaboratively with peer workers, volunteers and other facilitators.
- Maintain accurate attendance, outcome and follow-up records.
- Help develop new groups in response to service-user and community needs.
Previous group facilitation experience is essential.
2. Daytime Community Outreach
- Work actively in the community, engaging people who may not readily access mainstream services and ensuring that BUBIC remains visible, approachable and responsive.
- Deliver planned daytime outreach in community settings.
- Engage people affected by drug and alcohol use, homelessness and rough sleeping.
- Provide appropriate harm-reduction advice, information and practical support.
- Build trust while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
- Identify support needs, risks and opportunities for further engagement.
- Signpost and make appropriate referrals to treatment, housing, health and community services.
- Follow up people engaged through outreach to support continuity and reduce disengagement.
- Contribute to community events, awareness activity and partnership initiatives.
- Record outreach contacts, interventions, referrals and outcomes promptly and accurately.
Previous outreach experience is essential.
3. Substance Misuse, Recovery & Harm Reduction
Apply a sound working knowledge of substance misuse and recovery, including:
- Drugs and alcohol and their potential physical, psychological and social effects.
- Evidence-informed harm-reduction principles and approaches.
- Recovery, motivation and stages of change.
- Overdose awareness, risk recognition and escalation.
- The relationship between substance misuse, homelessness, trauma, mental wellbeing and social exclusion.
- Barriers to treatment and the factors that can contribute to disengagement.
- Local referral, treatment and support pathways.
- The limits of the role, including when a matter requires referral or escalation to an appropriately qualified clinical professional.
Clinical knowledge, or experience of working alongside clinical substance misuse services, is highly desirable.
4. Partnership & Multi-Agency Working
Represent BUBIC positively within local multi-agency networks and work collaboratively with substance misuse, alcohol, housing, homelessness, health, local authority and community services.
- Build constructive working relationships with partner agencies, including The Grove, HAGA/alcohol services, local authority teams, housing and hostel providers, and health and community organisations.
- Attend relevant multi-agency meetings and contribute appropriately to coordinated support planning.
- Maintain an up-to-date understanding of local referral pathways and available services.
- Share information lawfully and proportionately in line with confidentiality, data protection and safeguarding requirements.
- Advocate appropriately for service users and support effective access to services.
- Help reduce unnecessary hand-offs between agencies and promote continuity of support.
5. Community Engagement
- Engage positively with local residents, community groups, businesses and organisations.
- Help identify emerging issues affecting people and communities.
- Support community outreach events and awareness activities.
- Promote informed understanding of substance misuse, recovery and harm reduction.
- Challenge stigma surrounding addiction, homelessness and recovery in a respectful and constructive way.
- Support people to reconnect positively with their communities and wider support networks.
6. Recording, Monitoring & Outcomes
- Maintain clear, timely and respectful outreach records and case notes.
- Record group attendance, engagement and outcomes.
- Document referrals, signposting and follow-up actions.
- Contribute to engagement figures, monitoring returns and service reporting.
- Record safeguarding, welfare and risk concerns in accordance with procedure.
- Capture evidence of positive outcomes, progression and learning.
All records must be accurate, objective, confidential and completed within required timescales.
7. Safeguarding & Professional Responsibilities
- Follow BUBIC’s safeguarding, confidentiality, data protection, outreach and lone-working policies and procedures.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
- Identify, record and report safeguarding and welfare concerns promptly.
- Participate in supervision, team meetings, reflective practice and relevant training.
- Work respectfully with service users, colleagues, volunteers, peer workers and partner agencies.
- Contribute positively to service development, quality improvement and a collaborative team culture.

What Success in the Role Looks Like
The successful post holder will combine professional knowledge with humanity, consistency and accountability. They will be equally comfortable facilitating a group, working alongside an outreach team, liaising with statutory or clinical services and engaging a person who has lost trust in services. Their work will help people feel heard, reduce barriers to support, strengthen engagement and create clearer routes towards recovery, stability and opportunity.
Additional Information
This is a community-facing role and requires flexibility in where work is undertaken.
The post holder must comply with all BUBIC policies, procedures and reasonable management instructions.
