Sewing Machinist / Soft Furnishing's maker

Shauna Kelly Interiors are looking for a skilled Soft Furnishings Maker / Sewing Machinist to help us develop a small in-house workroom supporting our interiors and bespoke cabinetry projects.

Location: Mid Ulster, Northern Ireland

Workplace: On-site only

Job type: Part-time / flexible hours to begin with

Pay: £14–£18 per hour depending on experience

Applicants must be able to reliably commute to our workshop/studio location in Mid Ulster, Northern Ireland.

About the role

This is a hands-on making role. It is not a retail, sales or public-facing position.

We currently work with trusted external curtain makers and upholsterers, and we will continue to do so. However, we are now looking to bring some simple soft furnishings and upholstery-style finishing pieces in-house, particularly items that complement our interior design and bespoke cabinetry projects.

The role would suit someone with experience in soft furnishings, sewing, curtain making, cushion making, upholstery, alterations, workroom production or industrial sewing.

The role will include

Making scatter cushions, piped cushions and decorative cushions
Making box cushions, bench cushions and seat pads
Producing window seat cushions, banquette cushions and boot room cushions
Working with foam, wadding, fillings, zips, piping and trims
Cutting and preparing fabrics accurately
Using an industrial sewing machine
Making simple lined curtains where suitable
Assisting with simple upholstered panels, headboard panels and fabric-covered pieces
Working from designer instructions, measurements and fabric specifications
Helping keep the workroom organised, tidy and efficient
Helping us decide which items are suitable to make in-house and which should remain with specialist suppliers

About you

We are looking for someone who is practical, careful and quality-focused.

You should have good sewing and fabric-handling experience, with the ability to produce a neat, professional finish. Experience with cushions, soft furnishings, curtain making, upholstery, alterations or industrial sewing would all be relevant.

You do not need to have experience in every area, but you should be confident working with fabrics and willing to turn your hand to different types of interior finishing work.

Useful experience

Experience in any of the following would be helpful:

Industrial sewing machine work
Cushion making
Piped cushions
Box cushions and seat pads
Curtain making
Simple soft furnishings
Light upholstery
Upholstered panels or headboards
Fabric cutting and preparation
Working with designer fabrics
Pattern matching and fabric direction
Alterations or sewing workroom experience
Furniture, interiors or manufacturing experience

Personal qualities

The right person will be:

Careful and detail-focused
Confident working with fabrics
Tidy and organised
Practical and hands-on
Reliable and trustworthy
Able to work independently once shown what is required
Respectful of expensive fabrics and materials
Comfortable working as part of a small interiors and manufacturing team
Willing to help develop a new in-house workroom area

Hours

This role can be part-time or flexible to begin with, with the possibility of increasing hours as the workroom develops.

We are open to discussing a suitable working pattern with the right person.

Pay

Pay will depend on experience.

Expected range: £14–£18 per hour.

A higher rate may be considered for someone with strong experience who can help us set up and develop the workroom.

Shauna Kelly Interiors is an interior design studio working on residential projects across Ireland and the UK.

KRAFTED is our bespoke cabinetry and joinery business, producing wardrobes, media units, boot rooms, banquettes and other fitted furniture pieces.

This role will help bring selected finishing details in-house, allowing us to produce cushions, seat pads, simple soft furnishings and upholstered details to support our projects.
