Role Purpose
To design and deliver high-quality Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) and wellbeing-focused sessions that enable young people (16–19) to develop the skills, knowledge and resilience needed for successful adult lives. Session will focus on employment, independent living, community participation and positive physical and emotional wellbeing, underpinned by core post-16 personal, social and health education (PSHE) principles.
The Student Mentor role is central to ensuring that each learner feels safe, supported and empowered to navigate both personal challenges and future pathways.
Key Responsibilities1. Preparation for Adulthood, Transition and Post-16 Pathways
· Plan, deliver and review high-quality 1:1, paired and small-group sessions that support Preparation for Adulthood outcomes for young people, particularly within post-16 provision.
· Ensure delivery reflects the full Preparation for Adulthood framework, including employment, independent living, participation in society, friendships and relationships, and good physical and emotional health.
· Contribute to personal development, PSHE and wider curriculum delivery in ways that are meaningful, inclusive and responsive to learners identified needs, aspirations and EHCP outcomes where applicable.
· Develop and adapt resources, learning activities and interventions that build confidence, independence, self-advocacy, decision-making and readiness for adulthood.
· Use assessment, observation and learner voice to identify needs, set meaningful targets, review progress and evidence outcomes over time.
2. Wellbeing and Mentoring Support
· Build positive, consistent and professional relationships with young people that promote trust, engagement and personal growth.
· Provide targeted mentoring and wellbeing support for young people experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, dysregulation, trauma-related needs, low confidence or barriers to participation.
· Deliver evidence-informed interventions and responsive support that help young people develop resilience, emotional literacy, coping strategies and self-regulation.
· Encourage young people to reflect on their strengths, identify barriers and develop strategies that support confidence, motivation and emotional wellbeing.
· Maintain accurate, timely and professional records of mentoring support, interventions and agreed actions.
3. Key Worker Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support for young people with SEND and social and emotional mental health needs.
- Able to manage case work for 2 to 3 young people on a daily basis.
- Build positive, trusting relationships that support engagement, wellbeing, and readiness to learn.
- Support young people to regulate emotions and manage behaviour in a safe, calm, and structured way.
- Implement individual support strategies in line with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), risk assessments, and agreed support plans where applicable.
- Promote independence, resilience, confidence, and positive social development.
- Work closely with project managers and colleagues to adapt sessions and activities to meet individual needs.
- Monitor, record, and share progress, achievements, attendance, and concerns with the wider team in line with organisational procedures.
4. Behaviour, Safeguarding and Pastoral Practice
· Support calm, safe and predictable learning environments through trauma-informed, restorative and relationship-based practice.
· Work with colleagues to promote positive behaviour, reduce barriers to learning and implement individual strategies that support regulation, safety and participation.
· Recognise, respond to and report safeguarding concerns promptly and appropriately, in line with statutory guidance, organisational policy and local procedures.
· Contribute to risk assessment, safety planning and the review of support strategies for young people whose needs present additional vulnerabilities or risk.
· Maintain a child-centred approach at all times, understanding that safeguarding and promoting welfare is everyone’s responsibility.
· Participate in training, supervision and reflective practice to maintain safe, effective and professional practices.
5. Multi-Agency and Family Working
· Work collaboratively with families/carers, internal colleagues and external professionals to support the best possible outcomes for young people.
· Contribute to review meetings, planning discussions, referrals and other multi-agency processes, sharing relevant information appropriately and professionally.
· Liaise with education, health, social care and voluntary sector partners to help young people access the support, services and opportunities they need.
· Support joined-up planning for learners with SEND, SEMH needs and complex circumstances, ensuring communication remains clear and focused on agreed outcomes.
· Work in partnership with families/carers to share progress, support participation and strengthen home-setting communication where appropriate.
Undertake any other duties commensurate with the level of the post, consistent with the needs of the organisation and the safety and welfare of young people.
Person Specification
The person specification below sets out the qualifications, knowledge, experience, skills and personal attributes required for the role. Candidates should be able to demonstrate how they meet the essential criteria and, where possible, the desirable criteria.
Essential
· Relevant level 3 qualification or above in education, youth work, health and social care, counselling, psychology, SEND, wellbeing, coaching or a related field.
· Strong understanding of Preparation for Adulthood and the importance of promoting outcomes in employment, independent living, community inclusion, relationships and good health for young people with SEND and additional needs.
· Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities in education and a clear commitment to child-centred practice.
· Understanding of SEND, SEMH, trauma-informed practice, behaviour support and barriers to engagement in education.
· Experience of working directly with children or young people in education, alternative provision, youth work, SEND, pastoral support or similar services.
· Experience of planning or delivering interventions, mentoring, personal development, wellbeing or life-skills support.
· Ability to build trusting, respectful and professional relationship with young people.
· Ability to communicate clearly, keep accurate records and contribute effectively to meetings, reviews and professional discussions.
· Ability to remain calm, reflective and solution-focused when supporting young people with complex needs or distressed presentation.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritise workload and respond flexibly across provision.
· Warm, resilient, emotionally intelligent and committed to high aspirations for young people.
· Commitment to equality, inclusion, safeguarding and continuous professional development.
· Willingness and ability to travel between sites and undertake duties across the organisation as required. Valid UK driving licence is mandatory.
Desirable
· Training in safeguarding, mental health, trauma-informed practice, behaviour support or youth work.
· Experience of supporting post-16 learners and/or transition planning into adulthood, college, training or employment.
· Experience of working with families and multi-agency professionals.
