Job summary

Immigration Enforcement is responsible for enforcing the governments immigration laws, tackling illegal migration, removing foreign national offenders and immigration offenders from the UK. The International Returns Service Command (IRSC) was established in 2023, bringing together Returns Logistics Operations, Escorting Operations, and Detention Progression and Returns, supported by IRSC Central Operations. These teams are central to Immigration Enforcements operational activity, delivering the return of Foreign National Offenders (FNOs) and individuals with no legal right to remain in the United Kingdom as part of the wider Returns Directorate.

Job description

Security, Use of Force & Intelligence Assurance Officer plays an important role in supporting the safe, lawful and effective delivery of IRSC operations. This includes providing operational and assurance support across international removals, Foreign National Offender returns, charter flight operations, overseas movements, and in-country escorting activities.

Working within a dynamic operational environment, the post holder will contribute to the oversight and monitoring of security arrangements and the use of force within the escorting contract. They will provide high-quality administrative and operational support, helping to ensure compliance with immigration legislation, Home Office policy, and contractual obligations, while supporting the continuous improvement of operational standards and assurance processes.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of immigration legislation, policies, procedures and required training, including personal protection and Home Office Manual for Escorting Safely (HOMES), ensuring all activity is lawful, proportionate and compliant.
Represent the team professionally at meetings and when engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
Maintain and update security, contingency, intelligence, corruption prevention, risk reduction and service credit trackers and logs, escalating concerns through appropriate governance channels.
Support HEOs in planning, recording and monitoring security reviews, recommendations, contingency exercises and operational meetings.
Assist in the development and delivery of new security strands, initiatives and assurance activity across operational areas.
Maintain and manage Use of Force databases and records, reviewing paperwork, reports and footage in line with policy and assurance frameworks.
Conduct checks on agreed samples of incident footage, identifying emerging risks or themes and escalating where required.
Maintain charter flight calendars, support operational escorts, overseas removals and ports when directed, and liaise with International Returns teams and suppliers to resolve operational issues.

Working Pattern

Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis.

Shift Working

Successful candidates will need to be able to attend for all shifts including early starts, late night finishes, and overnight shifts. These shifts may be outside of public transport operating hours.

Training

Full training will be provided internally to help you develop the knowledge and skills needed for the role. Your learning will begin with structured training and continue through practical, on-the-job experience, supported by an experienced colleague or mentor. Throughout your development, you will receive ongoing guidance and encouragement to build your confidence and competence. You will also work as part of a supportive team, with colleagues always available to provide advice and assistance whenever needed.

Travel

Travel may be required to a variety of locations across the UK, including airports and regional sites, depending on business needs.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

Experience of working in an operational or assurance role within a regulated or compliance‑based environment.
Knowledge or demonstrable understanding of Use of Force principles, security measures, and risk management.
Excellent organisational and administrative skills with high attention to detail.
Ability to work flexibly, manage competing priorities, and respond to short‑notice operational requirements.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to handle sensitive and complex information appropriately.

Desirable Criteria

Strong understanding of, or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, immigration powers, legislation, and policy.

Licences

Due to the nature of the work and/or the geographical area, driving is an essential requirement for this role. You will be required to drive on official business. You must have a full valid UK manual/automatic driving licence.
