We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Database) to join our Infrastructure Engineering team. You'll play a key role in delivering, supporting, and evolving our database platforms, with a particular focus on Oracle and MongoDB technologies.

Working across cloud-based and modern database environments, including Oracle on AWS, MongoDB Atlas, PostgreSQL, and automation tools, you'll help ensure our services remain secure, resilient, and highly available. You'll be involved in database administration, performance optimisation, security, backup and recovery, monitoring, and supporting major technology and business change initiatives.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join the Database Support team. Working in an agile environment, this team supports Oracle and MongoDB database instances that underpin the core business functions of Companies House.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Database) you will be:

Defining, building, bringing into service, operating, supporting, continually improving new and existing database technologies, to serve a variety of user needs.
Managing database configuration, maintain system access and security, leading database upgrades and ensuring latest patches are applied.
Managing service availability, by proactively monitoring capacity along with performance tuning using Oracle OEM to identify issues before they occur.
Managing incidents, requests, changes and problems, providing resolutions including root cause analysis.
Maximise the use of tools and technologies and drive continuous improvement to deliver operational excellence.

On-call opportunities:

Due to the nature of this role, there will occasionally be a requirement to work overtime during weekdays and weekends. You will also be expected to participate in an on-call rota, providing essential cover to ensure services remain operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including Bank Holidays.

Participation in the on-call rota will only be required once you have demonstrated the necessary skills, knowledge, and competence to undertake on-call duties confidently.

Additional payments are available for both on-call duties and approved overtime, paid in addition to your annual salary.

Person specification

We're looking for the following skills and experience that will be assessed throughout the selection process.

The successful candidate will have:

Strong experience administering and supporting Oracle Database 19c environments, including performance monitoring, backup and recovery, routine maintenance, upgrades, and operational troubleshooting.
Experience working with Oracle Active Data Guard, ensuring high availability, disaster recovery readiness, and replication monitoring.
Good working knowledge of AWS Cloud services, with experience supporting database and infrastructure workloads in cloud-based environments.
Familiarity with MongoDB Atlas, including deployment support, monitoring, and operational management activities.
Familiarity with configuration management and automation tools such as Ansible to support deployment and operational activities.
Experience managing database storage using Oracle ASM (Automatic Storage Management) and supporting enterprise database infrastructure.
Proficiency in Unix/Linux administration, particularly shell scripting for automation, monitoring, and operational support tasks.
Experience working with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, including tools such as Concourse or similar platforms.

Where will you be working?

You will be based at either our Cardiff or Edinburgh office where you will be expected to attend on a regular basis. We are currently using a hybrid approach to the way we work which provides opportunities for you to be adaptable in the way you work so that you can achieve a healthy balance between your work and home life. The degree of choice you have will depend on your role and your day-to-day work activities. Your manager will agree regular patterns of attendance with you, however you may be required to make yourself available to attend the office more frequently when required to meet business needs.

As the wider Infrastructure Engineering team is currently based in Cardiff, there may be occasions where you are required to attend the Cardiff office for team collaboration, meetings, or other business needs, regardless of your contractual office location.

This vacancy is using Success Profiles , and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

What will the process look like?

Stage 1 Sift

An initial sift of applications will be carried out to create a shortlist. This will be based on the evidence provided for the following Success Profile elements: Experience.

Write a Personal Statement of 1000 words: tell us, using examples, how you meet the following criteria:

Stage 2 - Interview

Companies House uses a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you. We use the Success Profile framework and at interview we will use Success Profiles assessing the Behaviours and Technical Skills listed in the advert.

Successful candidates from the sift stage will be invited to a virtual interview, which will be conducted using Microsoft Teams.

The lead criteria to distinguish between tied candidates will be Technical Skill: Oracle 19c Database Administration, High Availability and Disaster Recovery

A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles.

All offers will be made in merit order.

Security Clearance

Successful candidates must pass a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check before they can be appointed.

BPSS is an entry level security check. It uses the Police National Computer (PNC) to make sure a candidate has no convictions. The check returns evidence of any current criminal record and un-spent convictions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements for Security Check (SC) before they can be appointed.

The requirement for SC clearance is to have been present in the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years. Failure to meet the residency requirements will result in your security clearance application being rejected.

In line with Government guidance, successfully appointed candidates will need to provide documents for our Right to Work checks.

From June 2026, applicants who are successful at interview will be, as part of pre-employment screening, subject to a check on the Internal Fraud Database (IFD). Your personal details (name, National Insurance number, and date of birth) will be checked against the Civil Service Resourcing Extract IFD.

This check will provide information about employees who have been dismissed for fraud or dishonesty offences. This check also applies to employees who resign or otherwise leave before being dismissed for fraud or dishonesty had their employment continued.
