Job Overview

We are seeking an Assistant Fire Engineer to join the fire engineering consultancy team.

This is an early-career technical role intended for candidates who have completed, are currently studying, or have previously undertaken higher education in a relevant engineering, architectural, construction or built-environment subject.

Applicants do not need to have completed a full degree. However, they must be able to demonstrate relevant academic study, technical knowledge or experience relating to buildings, construction, architecture or engineering.

Fire engineering training will be provided. The role is intended to provide a structured development route into a full Fire Engineer position as competence and experience are demonstrated.

Relevant areas of study

Applicants should have completed, partially completed or currently be studying a qualification in one of the following areas, or a closely related subject:

Fire Engineering
Architecture
Architectural Technology
Building Engineering
Civil Engineering
Structural Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Construction Engineering
Building Services Engineering
Construction Management
Another relevant engineering or built-environment discipline

Candidates who have not completed their qualification will still be considered, provided they can demonstrate that they successfully completed relevant modules, study or practical experience.

Applications from candidates with no relevant technical, engineering, architectural, construction or built-environment background will not normally be considered.

The role

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of experienced fire engineering consultants and will receive structured training in fire safety design, fire strategy development and technical compliance reviews.

The position is intended to support planned progression from Assistant Fire Engineer to Fire Engineer, subject to performance, technical development, competence and business requirements.

Key responsibilities

Assist with the preparation of fire strategy reports for new and existing buildings.
Review architectural drawings, technical information and design proposals.
Assist with assessments of means of escape, travel distances, occupancy, evacuation strategies, compartmentation and fire-resisting construction.
Support reviews of fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, smoke control and firefighting facilities.
Assist with retrospective fire strategy assessments for existing buildings.
Prepare technical notes, design comments and compliance review schedules.
Attend site inspections, design meetings and client meetings with senior team members.
Record site observations and assist with the preparation of professional reports.
Support responses to queries from architects, contractors, clients and Building Control.
Assist with construction phase fire assurance inspections.
Undertake technical research into relevant legislation, guidance and British Standards.
Maintain accurate project records and comply with company quality assurance procedures.

Essential requirements

Applicants must have:

Completed, partially completed or currently be studying a relevant higher education qualification.
Relevant academic, technical or practical experience relating to buildings, construction, architecture or engineering.
The ability to understand or develop the ability to understand architectural and engineering drawings.
Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit or similar drawing software.
Strong written English and the ability to prepare clear technical documents.
Good numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Good organisational and time-management skills.
Competent Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook skills.
The ability to work independently while recognising when technical guidance is required.
A genuine commitment to developing a long-term career in fire engineering.
The ability and willingness to travel to project sites when required.

Desirable experience

The following would be beneficial but is not essential:

Previous employment, placement or practical experience within architecture, engineering, construction or building consultancy.
Awareness of Approved Document B or UK Building Regulations.
Experience reviewing architectural, engineering or construction drawings.
Knowledge of fire safety, building control or fire engineering principles.
Membership of, or an intention to join, a relevant professional institution.

Training and career development

Structured training and supervised project experience will be provided in:

Fire safety legislation and Building Regulations.
Approved Document B and relevant British Standards.
Fire strategy preparation.
Means of escape and evacuation design.
Compartmentation and fire-resisting construction.
Fire detection and alarm systems.
Emergency lighting and smoke control principles.
Firefighting access and facilities.
Existing building fire safety assessments.
Construction phase fire assurance.
Technical report writing.
Client and design team communication.

The successful candidate will initially work under appropriate supervision and will be given increasing technical responsibility as competence is demonstrated.

The employee must not undertake work, issue technical advice or make representations outside their level of competence or delegated authority. Formal reports and technical advice will be subject to review in accordance with the company’s quality assurance procedures.
