UCL, based in Bloomsbury, is a welcoming, inclusive university situated at the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities. UCL is a top-ranked university in the UK for research in psychology, psychiatry & neuroscience. The post will be based within the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (www.ucl.ac.uk/pals) in the Faculty of Brain Sciences.

The postholder will be affiliated the cross-departmental Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL). DCAL is the leading research centre in the field of Deafness, Cognition and Language in Europe. It is a bilingual centre which brings together leading deaf and hearing researchers in the fields of linguistics, psychology and neuroscience.

DCAL researchers study language – its origins, structure, use, development, processes and relationship with cognition, using the unique perspective of deafness and deaf communication.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL), supporting world-leading research into deafness, language and cognition. The postholder will coordinate DCAL's research resources, including the BSL Corpus, BSL SignBank, the DCAL Assessment Portal, the DCAL Research Data Archive and the participant database, support research participant recruitment, provide administrative support to research grant holders, and coordinate communications, public engagement activities and events.

The role also includes coordinating Language Service Professional (LSP) bookings through Language Beam, managing Access to Work reimbursement claims, liaising with Finance to ensure the timely processing of invoices, and contributing to the effective delivery of DCAL's operational activities.

Please note: this role is advertised as full-time (1.0 FTE). However, only 0.4 FTE of the post is permanently funded and 0.6 FTE is funded from external DCAL research grants, with grant funding currently confirmed until March 2027, with further research grant funding already secured to support the role beyond this date. However, should research funding not be renewed, it is possible the FTE of this role will need to be reduced in the future.

About you

Experience of working in a higher education or research environment is desirable. Knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) and deaf communities is essential, and experience of working in accessible communication environments would be an advantage, although training can be provided where appropriate.

The successful candidate will have excellent organisational, administrative and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across a broad range of activities. They will have experience of coordinating projects, maintaining databases and digital resources, and producing clear documentation to a high standard.

It would be desirable for the successful candidate to have experience of working with websites, online platforms and digital communications, including updating web content and promoting resources through a variety of communication channels. Experience of organising events, coordinating meetings, preparing agendas and minutes, and supporting public engagement activities would be advantageous.

The candidate will be confident working collaboratively with researchers, professional services colleagues and external stakeholders, and able to build and maintain effective working relationships. They will demonstrate excellent attention to detail, sound problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently while managing competing deadlines.

Experience of administering financial processes, maintaining accurate records, and supporting research administration would be desirable. An understanding of research data management, participant recruitment, or online research resources would also be beneficial.
