Portishead Youth and Community Centre is a vibrant and dedicated community hub located in the heart of Portishead. Established in 1966, it operates independently to support local families, children, seniors, and the wider community through a variety of programs and activities. As a registered charity, we are committed to fostering a supportive environment that promotes community engagement and personal development.

Summary

Portishead Youth & Community Centre have been delivering Alternative Learning Provision support and making a difference to children and young people since 2019. In 2022 our organisation was granted approved supplier status across North Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

We provide a range of support including academic provision, mentoring, in-school support, music studio sessions and qualifications for young people to earn nationally recognised accreditation through ASDAN short courses, as well as creating bespoke packages tailored to the individuals we work with.

We offer holistic support, offering a blend of academic learning, mentoring, in-school support, and creative opportunities to meet individual needs.

The role of Alternative Learning Provision (ALP) Mentor is to support the daily provision and management of high-quality teaching and learning, and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH) support for students within Portishead Youth & Community Centre’s Alternative Learning Provision. The ALP Mentor will work under the direction of the Alternative Learning Provision Supervisor to ensure the safety, mental wellbeing, progress and engagement of students through our ALP work.

We have two, fixed term one-year maternity cover contract vacancies that we are welcoming applications for:

21 hours per week, term time only (38 weeks per year), typically Monday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Friday however this may vary due to service contract requirements
Variable hours dependent on demand of service contract, however the majority of hours will be delivered between 8.30am and 4pm (including 30-minute unpaid break)
6 additional training/planning/INSET days to be worked during school holidays, as planned by the ALP Supervisor
£13,557.60 per annum (actual)

This post will see the successful candidate delivering Alternative Learning Provision in a range of settings, as appropriate to the child/young person including in schools, at Portishead Youth and Community Centre and within the community.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide 1:1 mentoring for students with SEMH needs and /or SEND diagnoses and/or behavioural communication challenges
Support students in developing emotional literacy, resilience and social interaction skills
Work with the team to follow the referral process for prospective students
Deliver structured interventions to help students overcome potential barriers to learning
Work together with ALP staff to manage the learning environment within the ALP
Act as a keyworker for identified students, maintaining regular contact with all professionals involved as well as families
Supervise students and respond to incidents in line with policies and procedures
Develop effective working relationships with the schools and parent/carers
Ensure that all interactions are underpinned by our relational approach ensuring that students feel valued and when challenged on inappropriate behaviours, that this is done in a restorative way with appropriate consequences
Support the delivery of vocational and academic learning activities under the guidance of the ALP Supervisor
To ensure the safeguarding policy and procedures for reporting are carried out appropriately
To provide transport to the students between ALP settings and/or home-school (full clean driving licence with access to a car with business insurance cover, essential).

Professional development

Help keep knowledge and understanding relevant and up to date by reflecting on your own practice, liaising with the ALP Supervisor, and identifying relevant professional development to improve personal effectiveness
Take opportunities to build the appropriate skills, qualifications, and/or experience needed for the role, with support from PYCC.

Other Responsibilities

Responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
Comply with and assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to safeguarding; health, safety and security; confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns in line with PYCC policies and procedures
Be aware of and comply with all organisation policies and procedures
Be aware of and support difference and ensure equal opportunities for all
Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
Attend and participate in relevant meetings, training and learning activities as required
Attend regular CPD training opportunities
