Full job description

Shift Pattern

This role operates on a 2-3-2 continental shift pattern, working 7:00am to 7:00pm, including weekends and bank holidays as scheduled.

Job Purpose

To ensure the accurate preparation, printing, allocation, and control of customer labels and associated documentation, supporting production requirements while maintaining quality, traceability, and stock control. The role develops through three competency levels, with each level building upon the responsibilities of the previous one.

Key ResponsibilitiesLevel 1 – Print Room Operator

The core responsibilities of the role include:

Complete Print Room integrity checks.
Prepare and export production data to manufacturing areas.
Print ASN labels, pallet labels and sample labels in accordance with customer requirements.
Allocate printed labels to production jobs.
Reconcile labels and investigate any discrepancies.
Prepare and print labels using Prophet in line with job specifications.
Use barcode scanners to maintain traceability and stock accuracy.
Maintain label stock control and order labels through internal systems.
Create Label Specification Forms.
Understand and follow the New Line Form approval process.
Create new label and film templates in accordance with customer specifications.
Maintain knowledge of label and film design within printing software.
Carry out label and film verification checks to ensure compliance with customer requirements.
Maintain an understanding of all Print Room documentation and associated paperwork.
Monitor, record and manage label waste in line with company procedures.

Level 2 – Senior Print Room Operator

(Includes all Level 1 responsibilities.)

In addition to Level 1 duties, the role includes:

Cross-check completed paperwork and processes, identifying and resolving discrepancies.
Review procedures and communicate changes to the wider team.
Monitor consumable stock levels and place orders when required.
Support stock allocation activities.
Provide training, coaching and onboarding for new team members.
Support the Print Room team with daily operational requirements.
Attend and contribute to daily operational meetings.
Communicate effectively with departments across the business.
Create and set up new customer labels.
Deputise for the Print Room Supervisor during periods of absence, including:
Coordinating daily workload.
Monitoring KPIs.
Issuing daily supermarket sheets.
Supporting operational decision-making.
Assist with the management of returnable assets (crates and pallets), including:
Stock control.
Placing orders.
De-hiring through customer portals.
Communicating updates to relevant stakeholders.

Level 3 – Print Room Lead

(Includes all Level 1 and Level 2 responsibilities.)

In addition to Levels 1 and 2, the role includes:

Produce team rotas and support workforce planning.
Complete departmental KPI reporting and performance reviews.
Audit Print Room processes and complete non-conformance documentation.
Maintain the Print Room near miss log.
Coordinate servicing and calibration of printers and associated equipment.
Lead internal audits and support the completion of corrective actions.
Ensure all Print Room procedures remain current, accurate and controlled.
Coordinate New Line Forms and New Product Development (NPD) activities where applicable.
Complete accident and near miss investigations and implement corrective actions where required.
Review existing processes and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Manage returnable assets, including:
Stock control.
Ordering and de-hiring through customer portals.
Liaising with production and relevant stakeholders.
Authorising supplier invoices.
Communicating with the Accounts department regarding asset management.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

Previous experience within a Print Room or label printing environment (desirable).
Experience of label setup and printing processes (desirable).
Knowledge of manufacturing processes, procedures and production systems.
Good computer literacy and the ability to learn specialist software.
Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
Good organisational and time management skills.
The ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments and all shift patterns.
A positive and collaborative approach to teamwork.
Basic literacy and numeracy skills, typically demonstrated through GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
