CC Towing Services is part of a larger group, and the role will involve some operational cross-over with other group businesses where additional support is required.
Role Overview
The Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of CC Towing's operations across both depots, ensuring jobs are planned, resourced, and delivered on time to our 24/7 customer base. This role oversees fleet and driver scheduling, coordinates call-outs and haulage jobs, and ensures the business operates safely, compliantly, and efficiently. The Operations Manager acts as the central point of coordination between customers, drivers, depots, and management, and plays a key role in maintaining the high level of service CC Towing is known for.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Job Scheduling
- Plan and coordinate the daily schedule of haulage, towing, and delivery jobs across the Hampshire and Essex depots.
- Allocate vehicles, trailers, and drivers to jobs efficiently, balancing planned work with 24/7 emergency call outs.
- Act as first point of escalation for urgent or out-of-hours jobs, coordinating a rapid and reliable response.
- Liaise directly with customers to confirm job requirements, timings, and any changes to bookings.
Fleet & Compliance Management
- Oversee the maintenance, roadworthiness, and legal compliance of the vehicle and trailer fleet, including MOTs, services, and inspections.
- Ensure drivers complete required daily checks and that defects are reported and resolved promptly.
- Maintain accurate compliance records and support audits of vehicles, drivers, and operating procedures.
- Keep abreast of relevant transport, haulage, and towing regulations and ensure the business remains compliant.
Staff Management & Scheduling
- Manage, motivate, and support drivers across both sites.
- Plan staff rotas to ensure adequate cover for scheduled work and 24/7 call out capability.
- Conduct inductions, training, and performance management for operational staff.
- Promote a positive, professional team culture focused on customer service and reliability.
- Review and approve driver timesheets and invoices to ensure accuracy
Health & Safety
- Ensure all operations are carried out in line with health and safety legislation and company policy.
- Maintain and review risk assessments and safe systems of work for yard, depot, and driving operations.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and implement corrective actions.
- Champion a strong safety culture among drivers.
Customer Service & Client Relationships
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regular customers and key accounts.
- Handle customer queries, feedback, and complaints professionally and promptly.
- Work with management to identify opportunities to improve service delivery and customer satisfaction.
- Support the sales element of the business by responding to customer enquiries, pricing jobs, preparing quotes, and helping to convert opportunities into confirmed bookings.
Budget & Cost Management
- Manage operational costs, including fuel, maintenance, and staffing, against budget.
- Obtain competitive quotes from suppliers, garages, and subcontractors where required.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety, compliance, or service quality.
Qualifications & Experience
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
- Transport Manger CPC, FORS experience is an advantage.
- Proven experience in an operations, transport, logistics, or haulage management role.
- Strong working knowledge of UK vehicle compliance, driver hours regulations, and roadworthiness obligations.
- Experience managing or scheduling drivers and vehicles, ideally within a 24/7 or call out operation.
- Experience in the towing, haulage, plant, or welfare/events hire sectors is highly desirable.
Key Skills
- Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage completing priorities under pressure.
- Confident, clear communicator, able to work effectively with drivers, staff, customers, and management.
- Calm and decisive when handling urgent call outs or unexpected issues.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable using scheduling or fleet management systems.
- Hands-on, proactive approach with strong problem-solving ability.
- High level of attention to detail, particularly around compliance and record-keeping.
Working Conditions
- This role is largely office based at CC Towing's Hampshire depot, with possible travel between sites and the potential for a small degree of remote working where this supports the needs of the role.
- As CC Towing operates 24/7, some out-of-hours availability will be required; however, on-call support will be shared across the team rather than sitting solely with this role.
- Regular office hours are 7:30am to 5pm.
- May involve time on site or in yards in all weather conditions.
