Multi-Skilled Engineer – Müller Skelmersdale
Be part of an exciting new chapter at Müller. Following the recent acquisition of our site, we’re investing heavily in new technology, equipment and infrastructure to create a world-class dairy manufacturing facility.
We’re looking for a time-served Multi-Skilled Engineer with food manufacturing experience, a strong work ethic and a passion for engineering excellence. PLC, automation and controls experience would be advantageous, as would knowledge of dairy processing, evaporators and spray dryers.
You’ll join a highly skilled engineering team, working with state-of-the-art equipment in a fast-paced environment focused on reliability, continuous improvement and high standards.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
- To provide safe front-line reactive maintenance and actively identify root cause and bring equipment back into service as quickly as possible.
- To actively seek and identify cost-effective improvements to site assets and equipment, improving efficiency and reliability.
- To observe, recognise and report on machinery or component defects or symptoms of impending failure and provide accurate CMMS data.
- To service, adjust and repair machinery and equipment using the necessary tools in a safe and proper manner.
- To examine machinery and equipment and report on condition, performance and plan actions for improvement.
- Carry out Planned and Preventative Maintenance to agreed schedules.
- To interpret and implement technical service instruction data.
- Complete planned corrective and performance improvement work.
- Use and support simple 5WHY OE techniques / RCA techniques through to permanent corrective action (“100-year fix”).
- Use and support departmental 5S programmes for workshops and stores.
Additional Reliability Engineering Responsibilities:
- Drive equipment reliability through analysis of asset performance trends and identification of recurring failures.
- Support Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) principles to optimise maintenance strategies and maximise equipment availability.
- Lead and participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA), failure investigations and implementation of sustainable corrective actions.
- Monitor and analyse downtime, Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) to improve asset performance.
- Develop and maintain condition-based and predictive maintenance activities where appropriate.
- Identify opportunities to reduce maintenance costs through improved reliability and asset lifecycle management.
- Work collaboratively with operations, engineering and production teams to eliminate chronic equipment losses.
- Support capital improvement projects by providing reliability input into equipment design, installation and commissioning activities.
- Ensure accurate asset history and maintenance records are captured within CMMS to support data-driven decision making.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, performance and operational excellence.
Our Ideal Candidate Will Be Able to Demonstrate:
- A recognised qualification is essential.
- Experience in the following: Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Single Phase, Three Phase and Conveyance systems.
- Previous experience in a food-related environment.
- A flexible approach and ability to adapt positively to change.
- Effective problem-solving capability.
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and prioritisation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong listening and communication skills.
Additional Reliability Engineering Attributes:
- Understanding of reliability and continuous improvement methodologies (RCM, FMEA, RCA, TPM, Lean or Six Sigma preferred).
- Experience using CMMS systems and interpreting maintenance data and performance metrics.
- Ability to analyse trends and make data-led decisions to improve equipment reliability.
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to challenge existing maintenance practices constructively.
- Experience supporting predictive maintenance technologies (vibration, thermography, oil analysis, condition monitoring desirable).
- Commercial awareness with the ability to balance reliability, production demands and cost control.
- Commitment to driving long-term asset health rather than short-term fixes.
Our ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- A Recognised Qualification is essential.
- Experience in the follow – Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Single Phase, 3 Phase and Conveyance systems
