1st Line IT Support Engineer
Salary: starting at £30,000 per year, depending on experience
Location: Leavenheath, Suffolk, with travel to other Group sites in Boxford and Ardleigh
Job type: Full-time, in person
Working pattern: 5 days over 7, with on-call and out of hours project work requirement on occasions.
About Us
The Boxford Group is a family-owned group of businesses based in East Anglia, made up of three well-established companies:
- Stoke By Nayland Resort – a hotel, golf and leisure complex
- Boxford Farms – a fruit growing business
- Peake Fruit – a packhouse and marketing enterprise
Across the Group, we rely heavily on a wide range of technology systems to keep our businesses running. This includes everything from standard IT systems such as desktops, servers, networking and Wi-Fi, through to more specialist operational systems used across hospitality, farming, production, communications and site infrastructure.
We are now looking for a capable and hands-on 1st Line IT Support Engineer to join our internal team. This role will work closely with our MSP partner, who provide 2nd and 3rd line support services.
The Role
This is a varied, practical and hands-on IT support role. It would suit someone who enjoys getting stuck in, solving problems, working across different environments and being part of a small team where no two days are quite the same.
You will be supporting users and systems across multiple sites, including offices, hotel and leisure areas, comms rooms, plant areas, farm environments and packhouse/production spaces.
This is not purely a desk-based helpdesk role. We need someone sensible, practical and willing to get hands-on when needed, whether that means checking cabling, tracing network points, getting behind cabinets, looking at kit in comms areas, or helping diagnose technical issues in operational environments.
Key Responsibilities
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Providing 1st line onsite IT support across the Group
- Handling and resolving standard IT support tickets in conjunction with our MSP partner
- Supporting Windows desktops, printers, Wi-Fi, networking, telephony, user accounts and general business systems
- Assisting with troubleshooting connectivity issues across multiple sites
- Helping with IT-related aspects of wider operational systems, such as TV distribution, communications links, production line equipment, Bio Digester Heat Plants and other site-based technology
- Carrying out regular IT maintenance tasks, including updates, security patching and routine system checks
- Supporting IT change work under the guidance of the MSP partner
- Escalating issues clearly and professionally where 2nd or 3rd line support is required
- Keeping documentation, notes and asset information up to date
- Working closely with colleagues across Maintenance, Operations and external support partners
About You
We are looking for someone with the right attitude, common sense and technical curiosity.
You do not need to know everything already, but you do need to be a solid all-round “techie” who enjoys IT, learns quickly and is comfortable working in real-world environments where the answer is not always obvious at first glance.
You should be the sort of person who can stay calm, investigate properly and think logically before blaming “the network”. We have enough ghosts in the machine already.
Experience and Skills
There are no rigid requirements, as we recruit based on talent, capability and attitude. However, the ideal candidate will have some of the following:
- Good general IT knowledge across Windows desktops, basic server concepts, networking, Wi-Fi and data communications
- 2 years’ experience in helpdesk, desktop support or general IT support
- A practical, hands-on approach to troubleshooting
- Confidence working with physical IT equipment, cabling, cabinets, access points, switches and end-user devices
- Good communication skills and a professional approach when supporting colleagues
- The ability to work independently, while knowing when to escalate
- A willingness to learn and develop technical skills
- Good written and spoken English
- IT qualifications such as CompTIA, MTA or similar would be useful, but are not essential
A full UK driving licence as the role involves travel between sites in Leavenheath, Boxford and Ardleigh.
Package and Benefits
- Salary starting at £30,000, and depending on experience and qualifications
- 28 days’ annual leave
- Opportunity to gain experience across a wide variety of business-critical technology systems
- Hands-on role with real scope to learn and develop
Interview Process
To apply, please submit your CV via Indeed along with a short summary explaining why you think you are suited to the role.
If your application is progressed, the first stage will be an initial Zoom call. This will give us the chance to explain more about the role and understand your technical background, experience and knowledge.
Successful candidates will then be invited to a second in-person interview, where we will focus more on fit, attitude, working style and whether the role and company are right for both sides.
