Due to continued growth, we are looking for a highly experienced Water Hygiene Engineer to work in a permanent static role at a large and prestigious healthcare site in Central London.
This is a key, client-facing position requiring strong technical knowledge, excellent organisation and, above all, effective communication. The successful candidate will act as a trusted on-site representative of H2O Hygiene and work closely with the client, site teams and H2O Hygiene’s management and support departments.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering planned and reactive water hygiene services across a large and complex healthcare estate.
You will ensure all work is completed safely, professionally and in accordance with site procedures, current legislation and healthcare-specific guidance.
You must be confident communicating technical findings, emerging risks and operational issues clearly and promptly.
This is not an entry-level position. Applicants must have substantial water hygiene experience, a strong working knowledge of Healthcare Technical Memoranda, particularly HTM 04-01, and practical experience working with closed systems and chemical dosing equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete routine hot and cold-water temperature monitoring.
- Inspect cold-water storage tanks and hot-water storage vessels.
- Carry out showerhead and outlet cleaning, descaling and disinfection.
- Complete thermostatic mixing valve inspections, servicing and fail-safe testing.
- Flush little-used outlets and support the effective management of low-use areas.
- Inspect and flush expansion vessels where appropriate.
- Undertake water sampling for Legionella, microbiological and water-quality analysis.
- Assist with tank cleaning, disinfection and system chlorination works.
- Support technical investigations and remedial actions following adverse water sample results.
- Identify potential water hygiene risks, non-conformances and system defects.
- Escalate urgent or high-risk findings immediately through the correct channels.
- Accurately record asset details, readings, observations and photographic evidence using the company’s electronic reporting system.
- Provide clear updates on completed work, outstanding actions, access issues and areas of concern.
- Liaise effectively with the client, estates teams, clinical representatives, contractors and H2O Hygiene colleagues.
- Coordinate access to sensitive or restricted areas while minimising operational disruption.
- Ensure works are completed in line with permit-to-work, infection-control and site-specific requirements.
- Maintain the tools, equipment, test kits, chemicals and stock required for the contract.
- Participate in site meetings, technical reviews and water safety discussions when required.
- Support audits and provide clear evidence of completed compliance activities.
- Maintain a positive, professional and presentable approach at all times.
Closed Systems and Chemical Dosing
The successful candidate will also be responsible for supporting the monitoring and treatment of closed heating and chilled-water systems.
Responsibilities will include:
- Monitor closed heating and chilled-water systems.
- Take closed-system water samples and complete appropriate on-site testing.
- Review laboratory and on-site results to identify adverse trends or treatment deficiencies.
- Monitor inhibitor, biocide, glycol, nitrite, molybdate and other relevant treatment levels.
- Carry out chemical dosing and controlled adjustments based on test results, system volume and technical guidance.
- Operate and inspect chemical dosing equipment, including dosing pots, dosing pumps and associated controls.
- Identify faults or concerns with dosing equipment and escalate any repairs or specialist intervention required.
- Assess closed systems for corrosion, scale, microbiological activity, poor circulation and general water-quality deterioration.
- Support closed-system flushing, cleaning, biocide treatment and inhibitor dosing.
- Maintain accurate chemical usage, test-result and dosing records.
- Communicate water-quality concerns and recommended corrective actions clearly to the client and H2O Hygiene management.
- Complete all chemical-handling activities in accordance with COSHH assessments, safety data sheets and site procedures.
Communication and Client Relationships

Essential Experience and Knowledge
Applicants must have:
- Significant experience working as a Water Hygiene Engineer or in a closely related role.
- Experience delivering water hygiene services within complex commercial or healthcare premises.
- Strong working knowledge of HTM 04-01 and its application within healthcare environments.
- A thorough understanding of ACoP L8 and HSG274.
- Practical experience working with closed heating and chilled-water systems.
- Proven experience testing, monitoring and chemically dosing closed systems.
- Experience operating chemical dosing equipment, including dosing pots and dosing pumps.
- The ability to interpret closed-system water-quality results and recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Knowledge of corrosion inhibitors, biocides, glycol and commonly monitored treatment parameters.
- An understanding of relevant closed-system guidance, including BSRIA BG 50 and BS 7593.
- Experience with temperature monitoring, sampling, asset inspections and remedial identification.
- Experience inspecting cold-water storage tanks and hot-water storage vessels.
- Experience inspecting and servicing thermostatic mixing valves.
- The ability to recognise, assess and clearly report water hygiene risks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Confidence working independently in a static, client-facing position.
- A high level of accuracy when completing electronic records and compliance documentation.
- A professional and reliable approach to attendance, conduct and presentation.
Applicants without demonstrable water hygiene, closed-system and chemical-dosing experience will not be suitable for this position.
Desirable Experience and Qualifications
The following would be advantageous:
- Previous experience working within a hospital or healthcare environment.
- Experience working alongside estates, infection prevention and water safety teams.
- Recognised Legionella control qualifications.
- TMV servicing qualifications or manufacturer training.
- Water Regulations training.
- Experience completing tank cleans and system disinfections.
- Experience investigating adverse microbiological results.
- Experience with closed-system flushing, cleaning and chemical treatment programmes.
- Familiarity with permit-to-work and healthcare infection-control procedures.
- Experience using electronic job-management and asset-recording systems.
- Relevant COSHH and chemical-handling training.
