Overview
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

To manage the school meal provision through preparing, cooking, and serving nutritious meals to pupils while maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety. Essential to the role will be compliance with, and reporting against, all food hygiene and safety standards and regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Menu Planning & Cooking

Plan varied, healthy menus that comply with nutritional standards.
Prepare, cook, and serve large quantities of food, including accommodating special dietary needs.

Health & Safety Compliance

Maintain a clean, hygienic kitchen environment.
Adhere to all food hygiene and safety standards and regulations.
Record temperatures for fridges, freezers, and food.
Work with external staff to comply with health and safety requirements and to develop the menus.

Administration & Documentation:

Order supplies and manage stock levels to prevent wastage.
Operate within a fixed budget.
Daily and weekly completion of accurate and compliant food and health and safety records.
Prepare reports and documentation as required.

Operational Duties:

Operate, clean, and maintain commercial kitchen equipment.
Set up dining areas
Assist in promoting healthy meal uptake.
Promptly clear tables, wipe surfaces, and manage the disposal of food waste to ensure a quick turnaround between sittings.

Supervision & Pupil Welfare

Support the supervision of pupils in the dining hall, encouraging good table manners and healthy eating habits.

General Housekeeping

Cleaning: Sweep and mop spills in the dining area immediately to prevent accidents.
General Duties: Perform routine light housekeeping tasks around the school, such as tidying communal areas, emptying bins, or disinfecting high-touch surfaces.
Safety Checks: Report any broken equipment or safety hazards identified in the hall or playground to the Caretaker.
Restocking: Replenish suppliers around the School, such as tissues, hand soap, toilet rolls and paper towels.

Inclusion and Safeguarding

Engage in all safeguarding training as required and adhere to all regulatory requirements.
Carry out all duties with due regard and a personal commitment to the School’s safeguarding, equality and health and safety policies and procedures, along with the staff code of conduct
Ensure that all safeguarding concerns are reported in a timely manner and in line with policy.
Promote the wellbeing of the children by curating a secure environment; fostering positivity, self-esteem, inclusion, and establishing relationships based on mutual respect.

Wider School Duties

Support pupils during break times, lunchtime, and school trips as required
Attend training, staff meetings, and review sessions
Work collaboratively with colleagues
Promote and demonstrate in action the vision, values and ethos of the School, ensuring these are embedded in everyday practice.

Essential Skills Required

Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (A, I)
Previous experience in a high-volume catering environment, ideally in schools (A, I)
Understanding of nutritional guidelines and health & safety legislation (A, I, R)

Strong communication skills (A, I, R)
Treats people fairly, equitably, and supports a positive school ethos (R)

Desirable skills required

Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate
Paediatric first aid (A, I)
Experience using the Safer Food Better Business pack to manage health and safety (A, I)
Has undertaken training in line with the expectations set out in the latest version KCSIE (A, I, R)
