Full job description

As a Descale Operative in our Finishing department, you will be working 12 hour days and nights on a four on/four off basis not including weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

Material Handling

Operate forklift trucks (counterbalance) to move and pack steel products safely and efficiently.
Transport materials between production, storage, and despatch areas.

Packing & Preparation

Pack steel coils, according to customer requirements and internal specifications.
Apply protective materials (straps, bags).
Check product dimensions, quality, weight and labelling before packing.
Follow packing schedules and meet daily output targets.

Quality & Safety

Inspect materials for defects or incorrect specifications, reporting issues immediately.
Ensure all loads comply with safety standards and quality procedures.
Maintain a clean and organised work area.
Adhere to site safety rules, PPE requirements, and safe operating procedures at all times.

Documentation

Complete packing records and stock movement logs.
Use computer systems.
Communicate effectively.

Skills & Experience Required

Valid Forklift Truck licence (counterbalance).
Experience in a heavy industrial or steel manufacturing environment (preferred).
Ability to read and follow technical instructions or packing specifications.
Good awareness of health & safety and manual handling practices.
Ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
Strong teamwork, communication, and time-management skills.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Ability to lift materials and work on your feet for extended periods.
Comfortable working in a heavy industrial environment with noise, heat, and large machinery.
Willingness to work shifts (12 hour day/night shifts) , including potential overtime.
