Full job description

Bookkeeper - Brentwood Office
Part-time | Tuesday or Wednesday, plus Thursday and Friday | 8.30–17:30 or

Part-time | Monday to Friday | 10:00–15:00

Salary £28k to £32k pro rata Dependent on experience

Bennetts are a family run Funeral Directors, established in 1881, and we have earned an enviable reputation in providing the best expertise and understanding to the Essex community.

We have offices in Brentwood and Billericay, and a fleet of Classic Rolls Royce Phantoms and Mercedes E Class, plus Land Rover Defenders and support vehicles. Bennetts also help many families through our Bereavement Support Programmes and are involved with various local community and charity activities.

Working in the funeral industry provides meaningful and rewarding work, and gives the chance of making a real difference and building strong community connections.

If you are an experienced bookkeeper with a passion for providing exceptional service to our team and our families, we would love to hear from you. This is a part time role, and we are open to someone working 3 days per week from 8.30am to 5.30pm, or over 5 days from 10am until 3pm, we can offer some flexibility with these days and hours.

What you’ll be doing

To be responsible for accurately recording transactions (sales, expenditure, payments, receipts) within all company Xero accounts. Regular tasks include bank reconciliations, income and expenditure, monthly sales and payroll journals.

Issuing monthly reports, P/L, Balance sheet, Debtors list, to summarise the business’s financial position.

Maintaining debtor ledgers within Funeral Management Software including posting and issuing receipts following payments and ensuring funeral and sundry accounts are settled promptly.

The reconciliation of credit card statements and petty cash on a regular basis.

Raising invoices of funeral accounts and sundry accounts, and produce weekly reports.

Ensuring prompt payments for funerals and sundry funeral suppliers.

To pay in cheques and cash on a weekly basis.

Preparing quarterly VAT returns, including partial exemption calculations, and assist the Management Team and Company Accountants with end of year accounts.

Various ad hoc financial duties, and liaising with the software teams for training and resolving problems.

Assisting in the office, taking calls and dealing with general enquiries, and covering reception when needed.

To attend courses and training as necessary to increase your knowledge and keep up to date on regulations.   

What we’re looking for

Proven experience as a Bookkeeper
Experience using Xero and internal database systems
Strong understanding of bookkeeping practices and procedures
AAT qualifications desirable
Familiarity with VAT returns
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to work independently, and the confidence to take the initiative in setting up and improving processes
A proactive, flexible attitude with a willingness to help with both bookkeeping and administrative tasks
