Job Title: Deputy Manager
Location: Bexhill-on-Sea
Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience
Hours: Full-time

Reports to: Registered Manager

Job Summary

The Deputy Manager will support the Registered Manager in the day-to-day running of the 35-bed residential care home, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care in accordance with CQC regulations and best practices. The Deputy Manager will provide leadership and support to the care team, develop and implement care plans, and maintain a safe and compliant environment for residents and staff.

This role follows a structured shift pattern of either 36 hours or 48 hours per week, with each shift consisting of 12 hours. The successful candidate must be flexible and able to work across the full shift pattern, including weekends and occasional short-notice cover when required.

Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership and Management

Provide strong leadership and positive role modelling to the care team.
Supervise, mentor, and support care staff, promoting their professional development.
Delegate tasks effectively and ensure efficient workflow within the care home.
Contribute to the recruitment, induction, and training of new staff members.
Monitor staff performance, provide constructive feedback, and conduct regular supervisions and appraisals.
Foster a positive and collaborative working environment.
Manage staff rotas to ensure adequate staffing levels and skill mix, including covering shifts as needed, sometimes at short notice.
Participate in the home's on-call rota to provide management support outside of regular hours.

Care Delivery and Planning

Oversee the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care to residents, ensuring their individual needs, preferences, and choices are met.
Develop, implement, and regularly review individualised care plans in collaboration with residents, families, and healthcare professionals.
Ensure that care plans are accurate, up-to-date, and reflect the changing needs of residents.
Conduct and/or oversee resident assessments, including risk assessments, to inform care planning.
Monitor the health and well-being of residents, and ensure appropriate and timely responses to any changes or concerns.
Liaise effectively with GPs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate medical care and support.
Ensure the safe and accurate administration of medication in accordance with policy.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of resident care, medication administration, and staff performance.
Promote residents' independence, dignity, privacy, and choice.
Ensure the provision of activities and social engagement opportunities that enhance residents' quality of life.

Compliance and Quality Assurance

Ensure the care home operates in full compliance with all relevant legislation, CQC regulations, and internal policies.
Maintain a thorough understanding of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.
Participate in CQC inspections and internal audits, implementing required improvements.
Monitor and evaluate the quality of care provided, driving continuous improvement.
Ensure all staff adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures.
Maintain awareness of the DoLS process and ensure compliance.
Manage and resolve complaints and concerns professionally and promptly.
Ensure the home is safe, well-maintained, and that all equipment is in good working order.

Management Responsibilities

Deputise for the Registered Manager in their absence, assuming full operational responsibility.
Attend management meetings and contribute to strategic planning.
Manage the home’s budget in the absence of the Registered Manager.
Communicate effectively with residents, families, staff, and external stakeholders.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience Essential

Minimum 2 years’ experience in a leadership or supervisory role within a residential care setting for older people.
Minimum Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care.
Fully trained and competent in medication administration.
Strong knowledge of senior care practices, including care planning, risk assessments, and safeguarding.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to prioritise tasks, manage time effectively, and make sound decisions under pressure.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Compassionate, caring, and empathetic approach to older people.
Competent in using IT systems for record-keeping and communication.
Must be able to commute reliably to Bexhill-on-Sea.
Flexibility to work 12-hour shifts within a 36‑ or 48‑hour weekly pattern, including weekends and occasional short-notice cover.
Being in Deputy role is not a prerequisite. Candidates currently serving in Senior or Team Leader roles with good knowledge, experience and a responsible attitude will also be considered.

Desirable

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care.
Experience managing staff performance and conducting supervisions.
Knowledge of CQC regulations and inspection processes.
Experience managing budgets.
