1. Job Purpose
Results Consortium Ltd is seeking a committed, enthusiastic, and learner-focused Functional Skills English Tutor to deliver high-quality English teaching to learners working towards Functional Skills qualifications from Entry Level to Level 2.
The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, delivering, assessing, and reviewing English learning programmes that support learners to develop confidence and competence in reading, writing, speaking, listening, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and communication skills.
The role requires an individual who can motivate learners from a range of backgrounds, identify barriers to learning, and provide effective support to help learners achieve their qualifications and progress into further study, employment, apprenticeships, or higher education.
The Functional Skills English Tutor will contribute to a positive learning environment by using inclusive teaching methods, differentiated resources, regular assessment, and constructive feedback to promote learner achievement and progression.
2. Main Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
The Functional Skills English Tutor will plan and deliver engaging English lessons that meet the needs of learners at different levels and abilities. Lessons should be structured, inclusive, and aligned with the Functional Skills English curriculum and awarding body requirements.
Key teaching responsibilities include:
- Deliver Functional Skills English from Entry Level to Level 2.
- Teach reading, writing, speaking, listening, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and communication skills.
- Plan lessons that are engaging, accessible, and relevant to learners’ everyday lives, employment goals, and academic progression.
- Use a range of teaching strategies, including group work, individual tasks, discussion, presentations, written exercises, digital resources, and real-life English materials.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of learners with different learning styles, abilities, language backgrounds, and support needs.
- Promote learner confidence, independence, motivation, and active participation in lessons.
- Embed employability, digital literacy, study skills, and communication skills within English teaching where appropriate.
- Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
Assessment and Learner Progress
The tutor will be responsible for assessing learners’ starting points, monitoring progress, and preparing learners for formal Functional Skills English assessments.
Assessment responsibilities include:
- Carry out initial and diagnostic assessments to identify learner levels, strengths, and areas for development.
- Prepare individual learning plans that reflect each learner’s needs and targets.
- Use regular formative assessment to check understanding and measure progress.
- Provide clear written and verbal feedback to learners.
- Prepare learners for exams through mock assessments, revision activities, exam practice, and targeted support.
- Track learner progress accurately and identify learners who require additional intervention.
- Maintain up-to-date records of attendance, assessment results, feedback, progress reviews, and achievement.
- Support learners to understand their targets and take responsibility for their own learning.
- Liaise with managers, assessors, support staff, and other tutors to ensure learners receive appropriate academic and pastoral support.
Curriculum Planning and Quality Assurance
The Functional Skills English Tutor will contribute to the development and improvement of teaching materials, schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment resources.
Responsibilities include:
- Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans, resources, and assessment materials in line with curriculum requirements.
- Ensure teaching materials are current, inclusive, and appropriate for learner needs.
- Participate in curriculum development, standardisation meetings, and quality improvement activities.
- Contribute to internal quality assurance processes, including observations, learner feedback, file audits, and reviews.
- Reflect on teaching practice and use feedback to improve delivery.
- Keep up to date with Functional Skills English requirements, awarding body guidance, and sector developments.
- Ensure all delivery meets organisational standards, awarding body requirements, and regulatory expectations.
3. Learner Support and Inclusion
The tutor will support learners from diverse backgrounds and help them overcome barriers that may affect attendance, engagement, achievement, or progression.
Key responsibilities include:
- Identify learners who may require additional academic, pastoral, language, or learning support.
- Use inclusive teaching strategies to support learners with additional learning needs or low confidence.
- Encourage positive behaviour, attendance, punctuality, and commitment to learning.
- Promote equality, diversity, inclusion, British values, safeguarding, and Prevent awareness within teaching.
- Provide one-to-one or small-group support where required.
- Support learners in developing confidence in speaking, presenting, writing, reading, and communicating in formal and informal contexts.
- Refer learners to appropriate internal or external support services where necessary.
- Maintain professional boundaries and follow organisational policies at all times.
4. Administration and Professional Responsibilities
The Functional Skills English Tutor will be expected to carry out administrative duties accurately and efficiently.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain accurate learner records, including attendance, progress, assessment, feedback, and achievement data.
- Complete registers, reports, reviews, and documentation within required deadlines.
- Use the organisation’s management information systems and online learning platforms effectively.
- Communicate professionally with learners, colleagues, managers, and external stakeholders.
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions, standardisation meetings, and professional development activities.
- Follow all organisational policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, data protection, equality and diversity, and quality assurance.
- Contribute to a positive team culture and support the wider aims of Results Consortium Ltd.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties relevant to the role.
5. Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
The successful candidate should have:
- A recognised teaching qualification, such as Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training, PGCE, CertEd, or equivalent.
- A minimum of Level 2 English qualification, such as GCSE English Language Grade C/4 or above, Functional Skills English Level 2, or equivalent.
- Good digital skills and confidence using Microsoft Office, online learning platforms, email, and virtual learning tools.
- A commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and learner wellbeing.
6. Essential Experience and Skills
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- Experience teaching, tutoring, training, or supporting learners in English or literacy.
